Squeaky Apple II disc drive

Post by Lardo Boffin » Tue Jan 30, 2018 3:02 pm

Hi all

I have just received a working but squeaky Apple Disc II 5.25” disc drive. The noise appears to correspond with the movement of the read / write head on its guide rails so I wonder if they need some form of lubrication? If so what with?

Many thanks

Lardo

Give 'em a good clean with IPA first, you might well find that does it (certainly has on most of mine).

Beyond that I'd consider a tiny wiping with light machine oil, or possibly the same with teflon bike grease...

That has definitely helped thanks. A little bit more cleaning and all should be good.

I use some Contact Cleaner Wipes, that I picked-up on eBay. They are for cleaning high current contactors. Soaked in IPA plus a lubricant that is left behind, once the IPA has evaporated.
