Psion 3a repair

Post by Andy1979 » Tue Apr 25, 2017 5:39 pm

Recently retrieved my Psion 3a 2mb from my parents' loft. Unfortunately it has suffered the dreaded hinge failure during storage. Luckily I was able to source another Psion from eBay which had perfect hinges but a broken display cable. Let the transplant surgery begin:
I followed the excellent guide on this site: ... screen.htm

When it came to removing the screen I found that mine was mounted differently to the linked guide. It's a later model from 1996 and some miniaturisation has happened with the screen driver IC packaging, so there is now a thick layer of foam. I had to remove two screws from the bottom of the lid and then carefully lever open the metal clips holding the display at the base. It then popped out quite easily without having to remove the bezel surround.
Quite a lot of parts - I am not the neatest of workers! Time to rebuild:
Old screen mounted in the donor psion lid, with original Psion base:
It lives!
Because this is startdot, here is the Psion talking to my A3010 using an original Acorn A-Link cable (the Psion 3a replaced an original Pocket Book which I sold at the time). I'm using PocketFS here but have since gotten PsiFS working which is even better.

Very good. =D> The 3a is a nice machine.

Why do I keep collecting Acorn gear? I'm going to need a considerably bigger man-cave. :?

I've never tried the later Psions but they always look great. I always thought Psion stuff was well designed, looked great and worked well. Shame they went the journey with the rest of them :(
