Sinclair 48/128 convert .TAP/TZX/etc to .WAV?

Post by CMcDougall » Mon Dec 05, 2016 10:05 pm

As some of you may know, I got a rare Toastrack 128k the other week:
viewtopic.php?f=41&t=5594&start=3540
and was trying to convert the file formats to .WAV so I could play more games from WOS/etc on it.

I found a prog called 'winTZX20.9a' but its not playing ball.....
When I convert the game Tapper it is 3:33mins long, but when I load it, it does say 'found tapper', then
says Err 0,1 or screen goes grey (after 10seconds+-) and shows the '(C) Sinclair' at bottom as if it has been reset :?
Funny how the original .WAV from tape I made does work, but it's 5:19mins :-k

found some .CSW files here:
http://www.planetemu.net/roms/sinclair-zx-spectrum-csw
as I know my .CSW files coverted using prog 'BackToLife' to .WAV do work, so may try those above...
EDIT: ^those don't work, says 'Not supported .CSW file version' :x

Or save hours of loading, and splash out £27 on a DivMMC card interface 8)

Have a look at this:
https://code.google.com/archive/p/otla/

I had reasonable success with winTZX. Probably your tape player's cruddy ;)

*runs*

forgot about this, TapDancer:
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=9174
says also plays them, so might try that

Get a DIVMMC of some sort. Aside the instant loading you can press the NMI button and select Save State from the help menu. The next time you play a game you can continue from where you left off! Awesome.

I don't normally subscribe to such nefarious behaviour but it does make life a lot easier if you want to play something like Bards Tale for example. You can set it up such that the save game process saves to a virtual cassette which you can reload from but it is a pain (you have to mount the cassette file each time you load and save and switch between that and the main program file to load the dungeons etc.) and far easier just to restore the save state and carry on.

Still jealous you got given one of these! By the time mine had been overhauled it has set me back over £200.

(C) Sinclair at the bottom would imply a reset into 48kb mode; probably it tried to execute something it thought it had loaded correctly but the program counter ended up flying off into nonsense until finally it wrapped back into 0000, where Z80s go at power on.

More helpfully: don't rule out using your mobile phone as a tape player. Apps like TeeZiX for Android and Speccy Tape for iOS will do the job.

I got back in the Sinclair stuff last year and have yet to see a DIVMMC for less than lol price anywhere since. I ended up paying around £50 for mine.
Sometime you can get the bare board and build your own but I have no idea how much cheaper that works out.

Mutant Caterpillar Games sold me an RGB cable with a toastrack refurb. I don't know if they have a stock of them or if they bought it in to order.

Their contact details are

http://www.mutant-caterpillar.co.uk/shop/contact_us.php

If you want to try them.

the software and more indeapth info is here : https://sites.google.com/site/interface1bis/home .

after reading this:
http://mrpjevans.com/2013/04/load-zx-sp ... n-seconds/
#-o , some do now seem to work, but only 40% so far I have tried.
.Z80 files also work, so now Tapper I don't have to wait 6:03, now 0:35 :D

also has some luck with the prog :winTZX20.9a , but only with .TAP files :?

received today the 1BIS interface from South Africa
the setup of the microSD card has to be done on a win<10 PC/lappy, so XP done it :)

but, how the hell, I need to type 'FORMAT 0' & 'FORMAT !0' :-k :-k
all i get is FOR, POKE, RUN, etc WTF?!
noticed there is a FORMAT at top of key0, but how the hell do I get it

EDIT: use Reset, then EXTEND MODE, SYMBOL SHIFT then 0 :x

EDIT2: has anyone actually got passed 'r Device not present, 0:1' :| , as connections at back are all good (cleaned 4 times, lots of black gunk off) & the joystick double port I got works perfect.........

I can't believe you, of all people, are stuck with tape images!!

Who shall be my leader now?

I take it you've tried the obvious, Googling for other tape image players for PC or phone.

For converting tzx to wav have you tried castool http://docs.mamedev.org/tools/castool.html, the exe is distributed with MAME.

I haven't used it but in theory it should be able to convert all cassette formats supported by various computers in MAME. It's a command line tool with the following syntax:
castool convert tzx game.tzx game.wav
- Nigel

BBC Model B, ATPL Sidewise, Acorn Speech, 2xWatford Floppy Drives, AMX Mouse, Viglen case, BeebZIF, etc.

^can't seem to find a download from that link...
BUT, got the 1BIS Interface working after the maker Dan told me to use a micro HCSD card (4to64gb) as the SD (<4) are now not supported /for sale.
So, can now load 128k games not in 12mins, but 2 seconds :D
Also saves and everything, well =D> =D> =D>

Nice! Have you checked out the other features of this as well? I already have a DIVMMC so it's hard to justify one of these as well unless the other stuff it can do is as cool as it sounds?

Sinclair spectrum 128k toastrack 1985 Issue 6U

Post by CMcDougall » Fri Jan 20, 2017 9:21 pm

^cheers for the heads up on this Lardo 8)

It is a well made board, and easy to use, after putting on the Logical Drives onto the >2GB SDHC micro (4GB = 118 LDs), & off it flies :o

I've only been playing lots of games from the card, not even tried the joystick port, but I do have two that came with my toasty, nor the mouse port.

It can also play .TAP etc files out with a extra lead that you can purchase if you have a Speccy/(Amstrad) +2/3 with no Ear in.
also it can play games straight from the WOS site, again not tried this, as need to purchase another lead & China board for 99p

Not had any bother with it, played it for 4hours solid the last two nights!! :D

EDIT : caps change thread here : viewtopic.php?f=11&p=199173#p199109

playing with my 'Toastrack' 128 again...
just trying things out again for a refresher.

wonder why they only let 2/5 of volume into the spectrum? did they miss a LM324 op amp
I say this as mine had a Tape Tester on startup menu, and even with volume out laptop 100% (& .WAV peaks -0.93db)
the bar only reached 2/5 of the way up when playing out to it [-(

here is a test .WAV for anyone who wants to check there EAR in socket / check loads ok (it does on mine)
also included below the firmware / OS for the 1Bis interface, as mine vanished :o

Reading this thread just now has given me a sharp pang of regret for having given away my 128K toastrack speccy >15years ago - surely I can’t justify re-buying one now........
