Acorn Atom Utility ROMs

Post by hoglet » Sat Nov 30, 2013 10:52 pm

Hi all,

I'm starting to put together a definitive list of Utility ROMs for the Acorn Atom, from various sources:
http://www.atomclub.nl/software/ROMS.html
http://www.atomclub.nl/software/romposs.zip
http://www.atomclub.nl/sites/Fpga/www.h ... n_roms.htm
http://www.atomclub.nl/sites/Fpga/www.h ... n_roms.zip
http://wouter.bbcmicro.net/_archive/atom/utils/

There are a few references I have stumbled across, but where I can't find the actual ROMs.

Does anyone know about any of the following:

Atom Demo ROM - Acornsoft

AEK Monitor ROM - Alan Knowles

Ross Software Utility ROM - might be the same as SoftTool on acornatom.nl

Super Toolbox - Micro Power
- See advert in Acorn User 83-03 No 8 Page 36

Machine Code Monitor / Disassembler - Micro Power
- See advert in Acorn User 83-03 No 8 Page 36

Graphics Screen Dump ROM for GP80 - PSION Computers

Thanks for this, I had discovered it yesterday.

I'm trying to get everything into a spreadsheet at the moment.

Here's my current list of "missing" ROMs:

AEK Monitor ROM - Alan Knowles
Atom Utility ROM - Willow Software
AXR2 - ECD Computer Workshop
GDOS - Gerrit Hillebrand
Graphics Screen Dump ROM - PSION Computers
Machine Code Monitor / Disassembler - Micro Power
Super Toolbox - Micro Power

Very interested if you can point me to any of these.

Hi Dave,

there are a few monitor/utility roms but I don't know if these are the ones you are looking for. If we had an advert or a description of the ROMs then it would be easier to identify them.

Here are 2 extra zip files with roms I have with 'ROM report.txt' description file.

Greetings

Here is what I know about each of these:

AEK Monitor ROM - Alan Knowles
- Mentioned on this page: http://www.silicium.org/oldskool/uk/acorn/atom.htm

Atom Utility ROM - Willow Software
- 17 new BASIC commands
- review: http://www.acornatom.nl/AcornUserGroup/4/AUG-1-0.htm

AXR2 - ECD Computer Workshop
- http://www.acornatom.nl/atom_handleidin ... /axr2.html
- probably not useful without the 64K RAM Hardware

GDOS - Gerrit Hillebrand
- manual: http://www.acornatom.nl/atom_handleidin ... /gdos.html
- probably not useful without the WD1793 or WD1797 hardware

Graphics Screen Dump ROM - PSION Computers
- No idea where I came across this

Machine Code Monitor / Disassembler - Micro Power
- See advert in Acorn User 83-03 No 8 Page 36
- http://8bs.com/cgi-bin/magsel.cgi?http: ... er8303.zip
- Also mentioned here: http://forums.bannister.org/ubbthreads. ... mber=49327

Super Toolbox - Micro Power
- See advert in Acorn User 83-03 No 8 Page 36
- http://8bs.com/cgi-bin/magsel.cgi?http: ... er8303.zip

OK, here's another question for the "Senior" Atom contingent:

What is the latest/best version of the following:
- AXR1/JosBox
- Atomic Windows
- Disk ROM
- Gags
- P-Charme
- Salfaa

Another question, there are two versions of the Floating Point ROM.

Floating Point - CRC AAA1
Floating Point 2 - CRC 3353

They differ in bytes 1201-1219

Any idea what changed?

The original AAA1 version only contains the code to initialize the A000 Utility ROM.

The latest 3353 version contains the code to initialize the E000 DOS ROM and the A000 Utility ROM. I'm not sure whether this was an original Acorn version, or whether this was modified by the community.

Hi Dave,

a little historie about the FP ROM:

Originally commands were handled like this:
- If a command couldn't be found in kernal, a check for the FP ROM was done.
- If the FP ROM was available and the command found, the command was execute otherwise a check for the #Axxx ROM was done.
- If the #Axxx ROM was available and the command found, the command was execute otherwise a jump to #C558 was done (ERROR).

The first patch for extra commands/Branquart was:
- If a command couldn't be found in kernal, a check for the FP ROM was done.
- If the FP ROM was available and the command found, the command was execute otherwise a check for the #Exxx ROM was done.
- If the #Exxx ROM was available and the command found, the command was execute otherwise a check for the #Axxx ROM was done.
- If the #Axxx ROM was available and the command found, the command was execute otherwise a jump to #C558 was done (ERROR).

The second patch for extra commands/Branquart was:
- If a command couldn't be found in kernal, a check for the FP ROM was done.
- If the FP ROM was available and the command found, the command was execute otherwise a check for the #1xxx ROM was done.
- If the #1xxx ROM was available and the command found, the command was execute otherwise a check for the #Axxx ROM was done.
- If the #Axxx ROM was available and the command found, the command was execute otherwise a jump to #C558 was done (ERROR).

So originally #Dxxx and #Axxx were checked.
In the first patch #Dxxx, #Exxx and #Axxx were checked (DOS not possible).
In the second patch #Dxxx, #1xxx and #Axxx were checked (DOS possible).

Greetings
Kees

I wonder what they are :D

Also managed to find copies of AXR2, GDOS 1.5,

Still looking for the other two Micro Power ROMs

- Atomic Windows v1.1

- Salfaa v2.6

There were some special versions of ROMs but mostly these changes had to do with running the ROM with some special hardware and were for personal use.

Excellent, thank you so much!

My plan is to try to include these in the archive and menu, with bootloader that will load them into RAM if you have an appropriate ROMRAM board.

I have Phill's board, which allows the 4K RAM page at #7000 to be remapped to #A000, so I will definitely support that one.

What other boards would it be possible to support, and how do they work?

I don't think there's a manual for the Demo Rom.

Just type:

?18=#A0
OLD
RUN

I did write a Basic Toolbox loader in the past:

http://www.acornatom.nl/atomarch/An90-02/

Will have a look to change it to work with the AtoMMC ROM.

I think there are 2 options to load ROMs:

1) Phill's RAMROM board with RAM at #7xxx
2) Other ROM board, ?#BFFF=x (switch to RAM bank at #Axxx)

The Toolkit ROM ("LINK #AF00 or LINK 44800. The screen will clear and the message PROGRAMMERS TOOLKIT will be displayed") was written I believe by Jim Baker and sold first by him and then Program Power as Programmers Toolbox. The ROMS are identical apart from the initiation message (kit versus box). I have both sets of ROMs and instructions if you don't have 'em...

Here's a quick update on the missing ROMs:

AEK Monitor ROM - Alan Knowles (found, thanks herklots)
Atom Utility ROM - Willow Software (found, thanks herklots)
AXR2 - ECD Computer Workshop (found on Kees's disks)
GDOS - Gerrit Hillebrand (found on Kees's disks)

So that just leaves three significant ones that are still missing:

Graphics Screen Dump ROM - PSION Computers
Machine Code Monitor / Disassembler - Micro Power
Super Toolbox - Micro Power

I'me particularly pleased we've found the AEK Monitor ROM because
- Alan taught me the basics of digital design many moons ago in Manchester
- it actually looks really good for debugging problems that only happen on the real hardware, where we can't cheat with Atomulator

I have a copy of this, but if you could post yours as well, the I can check they are the same version.

My plan was to try to include just the latest version of each ROM, rather than every version we can find.

Hi all,

I've got the following ROMs ready to add to the archive:

Code: Select all

A&F	Utility Kit
Acornsoft	Atom Calc
Acornsoft	Atom Demo
Acornsoft	Word Pack
Acornsoft	Word Pack - ED64
Acornsoft	Word Pack - ED80
Alan Knowles	AEK Monitor ROM
Alan Knowles	AEK Screen ROM
B.Poot/J.Jobse	Salfaa
Bram Poot Combox
ECD Computer Workshop	AXR1
Frans le Blanc	Disk ROM
Frans van Hoesel	P-Charme
G. Brandhof	ACE 2.0
G. Brandhof	ACE 2.2
G. Brandhof	ACE 3.0
Gerrit Hillebrand	Gags
Jos Horsmeijer	JosBox
Kees van Oss	Atomic Windows
Kees van Oss	SDROM 2
Kees van Oss	SDROM 3
Micro Power	Programmers Toolbox
Micro Power	Super Basic
Procyon	DisAtom Super ROM
PSION Computers	Psion Debug
PSION Computers	Psion Edit
Ross Software	Utility Rom
Watford Electronics	WE-ROM
Willow Software	Atom Utility Rom
Wouter Ras	MouseBox
I'm trying to collect together the manuals for each of these. I have most of them, but am currently missing the manuals for:

Code: Select all

Acornsoft	Word Pack
G. Brandhof	ACE 2.0
G. Brandhof	ACE 2.2
G. Brandhof	ACE 3.0
PSION Computers	Psion Debug
PSION Computers	Psion Edit
Can anyone help with any of these? I don't care what format they are in...

Also, are there any significant omissions in my list of ROMs. I've tried to be a bit selective, focussing on ROMs that load to #A000, and that don't generally required specialized hardware.

Hi all,

I'm having a some fun testing some of these ROMs.

Here's just one example....

When AtomCalc starts, it does a memory test of the memory between #3000 and #7FFF by trying to invert the first location in each page. Unfortunately, it doesn't reset the original value.

In Phill's RAM/ROM board, when a ROM is loaded into RAM and remapped as ROM 0 (with ?#BFFE=1), the ROM is still accessible at #7000-#7FFF.

These two things together mean is that AtomCalc ends up corrupting itself.

I am wondering if this particular behaviour of the RAM ROM board is a feature or a bug.

I'll try to patch AtomCalc so that it stops writing at #7000.
