Atom Unknown IC 24

Post by DaveLecky »

Hi Folks,

When I bought my Atom a month ago it had a rom in ic24, with my limited knowledge, and not having the command *ROMS I couldn’t find out what it contained.

I have a WE Adder programmer, so I had an idea to read the rom in the adder, but, the Rom is a, HN462532G, the adder has can program a 2532, see below, is this referring to the same chip? Or am I barking up the wrong tree.....

The window had no cover over it so it could be zapped anyway.

I would think a few lines of Basic could peek and print the first say 64 bytes, and that would probably say a lot about which ROM it is. But my Atomic theory and practice is too rudimentary to write the program.

IC24 is for a utility ROM, a 2532.
You can try P.$#A032 which will work for most roms to print the commands. If it doesn't, just read the ROM with you reader and if you upload the image, we can surely tell you which ROM it is.

You can also try this program to read the ROM:

Code: Select all

10 P.$14
20 FOR A=#A000 TO #AFFF
30 IF ?A>31 P.$?A;G.50
40 P."."
50 NEXT
60 END

Thanks for the replies, I’ll try later this after.

oss003, when you say, “ just read the ROM with your reader” do you mean, a programmer ?

I was hesitant to do that before in case it fried it....

That's right, programmers can read roms to verify the writing.

A HN462532G is Hitachi's 2532 EPROM; the pinout matches what is expected in IC24.

I would say run Kees' program, and capture some screen shots of the output usimg the HDMI adapter.

I'm sure those will let us work out what this ROM is.

The other thing you could do is run the ROM Test program from chapter 12 of Atomic Theory and Practice:

Code: Select all

    1 REM CRC Signature
   10 INPUT "PROM ADDRESS", P
   20 C=0;Z=#FFFF;Y=#2D
   30 FOR Q=0 TO #FFF
   35 A=P?Q
   40 FOR B=1 TO 8
   60 C=C*2+A&1;A=A/2
   70 IFC>Z C=C:Y;C=C&Z
   80 NEXT B; NEXT Q
  110 PRINT "SIGNATURE IS" &C'
  120 END
This is called ROM TEST in the software archive, or can be loaded manually:

That looks like YARRB is fitted, SDDOS v3.25 is the first ROM programmed into YARRB.

When YARRB is present, the ROM sockets on the Atom board are no longer used and cannot be read.

You'll either need to remove YARRB, or try to read the ROM in your Eprom Programmer.

Hi Hoglet,

I’m having some bother with my newly installed YARRB, the reason I was looking into what was on ic24 and how to program it was that i intended to remove the YARRB completely and reinstall my ic’s to see if the AtoMMC and atom were working as they should without the YARRB present.
I’ve never actually run any software on this atom since I got it a month ago but to use the AtoMMC with all the software on it, I will need a suitable utility rom present.....hence my current quest.

I have tried to read the eprom in my Adder and got this....FD FF....and nothing else.

That ROM looks like it's been mostly erased by ambient light.

Hi Hoglet,

Yes it looks like it, as long as I know now that my WE Adder will burn the HN462532G, I can go ahead and remove the YARRB, replace my ic’s, burn an AtoMMC rom and see how the atom behaves after that.

I’ve just tried to erase the rom in my uv cabinet, cooked it for 30mins......no change.

I’ll have to get another on flea bay for testing and just-in-case moments.
