Acorn Atom sort of simulator

Post by janvb »

Ever since I bought an Acorn Atom, way back in the 80’s, I was fascinated by its operating system.
To explore the brains of the Atom, the DISATOM became a handy tool. But in the end not handy enough. I found the listings of the Atoms ROMs more helpful.
But its really hard to grind through al that stuff. Especial the flags are hard to follow.
Then came the idea to make some simulator to watch the register and flags of the atoms 6502 while stepping through its program. I ended up with this.
Atom simulator.png
Its written in Visual Studio 2017 C# and used for observing registers and output to screen, address #8000-#81FF.
Its not made for playing games. [-X [-X
In the field uProcessor there are 4 buttons and a slider. When the run button is hit, machinecode will be executed from address in ProgramCounter, with speed adjusted by slider. Bottom slow, top fast.
With reset the whole bin file acornatom64k.bin is reloaded.
The change ok button confirms changes made to registers.
See link youtube for a short demonstration.

Hint, watch till end. Made a typoooo. Goodbey instead of Goodbye.
iam getting old.

AcornAtom.exe and acornatom64k.bin is added beneath.
Place both in same directory and run exe file.

Neat :) !

It would be nice if it could write out a trace log as this would be very useful in debugging code by seeing the execution. Many years ago I spent (wasted?) a lot of time trying to figure out how the BASIC interpreter worked, as I wanted to write a compiler. I did make a start, and some time in the future I will rescue the old code from one of my old cassette tapes.

Also would be nice if it could load a (BASIC) ATM format file.

On second thought i decided to give this program another name, for its definitely not an emulator.
Because I wrote it to observe the operating system of the acorn atom,
“OperatingSystem Monitor”
fits better.
.

Atom Monitor.png
.
Added some tooltips to the program plus files can be executed.
They are loaded into memory location #2900.
Most text based programs are executable, see screenshot above from program BIORYT,
I included this and HILO to zip file AcornAtom.zip.
