Atom upgrade options

Post by Boydie » Fri Oct 04, 2019 5:46 pm

Now I’ve got my atoms up and running, and have an AtoMMC (and have a birthday coming up :D ), I want to get them up to spec.
As far as I can tell, the essentials are:

RAM upgrade to 32k
Colour
Noise eliminator

What options are still being made/ sold for these?

I think I have all the Atom upgrades on the hardware list if you havnt looked at it yet (link in my signature), although it is not always up to date on what is available. I am sure someone will chip in with more info.

The Yarrb (memory expansion) boards are out of production because it uses components that are not available any more from regular suppliers. I am working on a new idea but that might take a few months before it's complete.

I'm working my way slowly through the list :)

The Atom SID is good fun, and my next add-on is a Co-Pro via the Atom TUBE I/F

I have a spare board of each if you're interested.

Having said that I went for a the Colour/HDMI I/F, Noisekiller and a Memory Expansion before the above.

Best

Thanks guys.

I was aware of the master hardware list, but ufortunately it doesn't give much of an indicator as to what's still available. From the various threads, I could tell I'd missed out on possibly the best options, ie YARRB and HDMI boards.
The alternatives seem to be Prime's boards, but again I couldn't tell if these were still in production (I did PM him, but didn't want to be a nuisance) or whether there were other alternatives I'd not heard of...

I already have one of your SID boards, awaiting construction. The Co-Pro is less appealing since I have BBC ones coming out of my ears!

It should, I change the status to ‘N’ if no longer available. But there are too many for me to track, so rely on people mentioning it.

Elektor once published an eprom switch board that we modified and converted to a cheap 32K ram board for the Atom. I'll dig one up if you are interested. It goes into the socket of the Floating Point rom with some additional wires.

Thanks for the offer, but my FP socket is already occupied. If you’re working on something new I’ll bide my time and keep watching...

I forgot to mention that the FP ROM goes onto this memory board as well so you keep this rom :)

But there are other ways to create a 32k ram on the Atom but I don't know if there are any pcb's available or even created.... If there is a demand for those simple boards, I can create one like this: http://acornatom.nl/atom_nieuws/1988/nr3/19883023.gif

It's a small pcb that goes into the 6502 socket and it holds the 6502 and a 62256 (32k) RAM chip. The board is called "brain transplant" and it was recently posted here: viewtopic.php?f=44&t=17926&p=248706#p248631

Thanks for the clarification; I’ll keep that in mind.

As an update, Hoglet’s still got HDMI and noise eliminator boards, so one of each will be coming my way soon. :D
That’ll teach me to assume that because all the order lists in the relevant threads are full there aren’t any left!

So all I need now is a decent ram board. Hopefully Prime still has some and will be sufficiently non-busy to help me soon... [-o<

I’m going to be a busy little bee...

Now have bare boards for:

Atom RGB to HDMI
Noise killer
Co-pro
AtomSID
YARRB (many thanks to Roland for finding a last one down the back of the sofa)

Plus a massive delivery from Farnell today, and ones from Mouser et al on the way.

Along with a few other machines to repair, this little lot should keep me out of trouble until Spring! :D

Many thanks to all for the help, advice, and relevant boards. =D>
