just got two Atom's

Post by eXne » Fri Sep 20, 2019 7:52 pm

Folks,

after many years I finally succeeded in aquiring two Atom's incl. a 5 1/4 FDD.
As I'm a newbie to Atom's I had quite a discussion with Multiwizard who kindly took the time helping exploring my Atom's.
I had an Atom with green text on the back, a Atom with red text on the back, red shift keys and white escape and break keys.
The one with the red tekst on the back was a special... A Prohet version.
Both Atom's are an issue 5.
It also turns out that some swapping took place.
Furthermore a more video memory was in the box, together with system memory, one with a 32 kB RAM chip and one with multiple stacked 2 kB RAM. Also a ROM expansionboard was in the box.
I read and saved all the EPROM contents.
After some TLC, cleaning, soldering, reseating etc. both Atom's are alive, but stil some work to do :D
Pictures in the next posts.

the first Atom was brought back to basic with the help of Multiwizard.
The original powersupply has been bypassed.
The thing I need to figure out is video.
I simply connected the composite video signal from JP4 to a scartplug which connects to my LCD monitor.
I only have the Atom prompt if I tilt the Atom, loose contact somewhere?

And the Prophet system.
Not sure if it is a true Prophet version as the return key is normal without being larger.
A couple of sockets are precission ones an indication of a Prophet version.
System memory has been increased and also the video memory.
The 5 1/4 FDD has a default powerconnector with one wire connector to the PSU and the three other pins joint together going to a loose wire..
I thought the FDD would have a 5Vdc and a 12Vdc connection... Some digging to do :D

Actually not sure how original you want to keep them but I would go for precision sockets everywhere.

Both memory expansions are not Prophet specific. In fact, they have nothing to do with the Prophet at all.

The main memory expansion is the "Brain transplant" as described in Atom Nieuws: http://acornatom.nl/atom_nieuws/1988/nr3/19883020.htm
The video memory expansion is a well known video memory replacement, also developed in the Dutch Atom User Group.

There were two reasons to use this kind of expansions:
1. More memory
2. Less power consumption

That was possible because the prices of memory chips went down at the end of the 80's.
A full equipped Atom (12+12k) and a few early expansion boards needed a power supply that could source about 3 to 4A. With the modern memory ic's you needed something about 1.5 - 2A.

Hmmm, can you clarify this a bit (picture)? With the 5.25” FDD are you referring to an Atom Disc Pack?

A floppy disc drive (FDD) needs 5V and 12V, the Disc Pack PSU supplies both (inside the pack) and has an external 5V plug that you can use to power an Atom.

Hi Paul,

sorry for being a bit unclear, Yes I was refering to a Atom DiscPack.
I've already sorted it out. The drive needs a +12Vdc and a +5Vdc.
The groundwire was broken loose. It was a bit messy so I've jumped to conclusions to soon, my bad
But thanks for reaching out.
And yes I'm picking up more knowledge. :D
