Atom Colour & floppy board interest.

Post by Prime » Thu Oct 01, 2015 10:21 am

Hi all,

As I've now sent the (hopefully) final test versions of Atom colour and Floppy boards out, assuming no major problems with them I should be in a position to order some production boards soon.

To allow me to gauge interest and estimate how many to order can people register interest here please.

Cheers.

Phill.

Count me in for a floppy controller.

Any idea on pricing?

Well that depends partly on the number of boards I have made :) Probably the most expensive component on the floppy board is the WD177x as you have to buy NOS components everything else I can get new.

Cheers.

You might also want to consider a RAMROM & one of Charlie's AtoMMC boards if he still has them. We can take a look /discuss this at Bolton as you say.

Well that depends partly on how many people decide they want a floppy interface, as they are the bus buffers for the PL6/PL7 bus It might actually in the long run be easier to get a bunch of the adapter boards made as these allow the use of standard LS244 / LS245 chips.

I may however need some more WD177x floppy controllers depending on how many people want floppy boards.

Cheers.

Interested in a colour board! I would appreciate a photo of the board fitted in an Atom though. My Acorn Atom Colour board (issue 3) does not fit in my Atom issue 5 (just a mm too wide, the case won't close).

(This is for the colour board, mind)

Was it one of my previous colour boards or one of the Acorn ones ?

I'll take some pictures of the current prototype (4.95) tonight, going to fit it in my issue 5 machine.

In the mean time the last two pictures in this facebook album :
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 2e1a48ee03

Are the Mk 4.3 board, the new version is pretty much the same size (it's slighttly less front to back but same width). Also Kees has one of the 4.3 boards and Wim has one of the 4.7 boards I believe threy can both get their cases closed.....

Cheers.

Colour reproduction on the new board is much brighter, it's much close to what I have seen on other machines with a 6847, namely the Dragon and Tandy CoCo machines.

I'll maybe take some pictures tonight and post them.

Cheers.

I there less "noise" (interference rather than snow) too? Or is that just atoms being atoms?

Yes I believe so, depending on what you are comparing to, the Mk 2.x board didn't have the noisekiller, the Mk3.x did.

I'll of course be quite happy to demo the boards at the next Bolton meetup.

I've updated the FB album to show the clearance on the new board and to show my bench Atom (the one without the keyboard).

Cheers.

Thanks for the extra photo's! I found that there are different versions of the Atom case (see this thread). The bottom of my Atom case is 1-2 mm narrower than the main board PCB. Anything plugged in that lines up with the PCB's edge will not fit.

From your new photo's it is still hard to see if the colour board aligns with the main board or if it is slightly less wide. If the distance from the middle of the 6847 socket to the edge of the board is larger than 83 mm it will probably not fit in my Atom case.

The Mk 4.95 colour board is slightly narrower than the main board, and I've managed to shave another 1.27mm off that, though alas I don't think without a fairly major change in the board I'll be able to shave any more off as I need to pick up the write enable from the ram socket.

The edge of the board is now pretty much over the edge of the rightmost ram socket.

Cheers.

Hi Phill

I'm interested in one Atom Floppy Disk board. It would be used with Roland's new Atom 2014 (pictures of mine here).

Sure,

Though it hasn't actually been tested with the new Atom....I don't have access to one :) I see no reason why it would not work with the correct settings.
I believe this is one of the things Bas will be testing it with.

Cheers.

If all the ram and rom on the FDC can be disabled there shouldn't be any problem to use it with the new Atom. You just have to load the DOSROM into RAM at #E000. The loader program for Atom DOS can be modified to achieve this. Actually, the only difference will be the rom image.

as you know Phill, keep a colour board aside please for me in readiness for you to 'throw' it in mine, should be easier now as you have already ripped 3/4 of the old mods out

I can now confirm that Phill's FDC board does indeed work perfectly with the new Atom, Both GDOS and 1770ADOS
Will be uploading new system.zip file containing drivers for the FDC Card.
