Apologies to those who pm'd me but it seems I may not have the source code for elite thk. I was about to reply to a pm with the source as an attachment when I decided to 'just make sure' and ran the executable that came with the source. An elite type display appeared but I had an uneasy feeling an upon rebooting the laptop - my wifes laptop - I now just get a flashing cursor in the top left corner.
Looks like I'm spending today putting that right.

Knew I had it kicking around somewhere, here's the updated 1.1a file.

This is a update to the release 1.0 of Elite - The New Kind, written by Christian Pinder.

The latest versions of Christian's source and executable can always be found on the New Kind website...

To run the supplied executable you will need DirectX installed. Windows 98 and NT 4 come with this.
If you are using Windows 95 and you haven't already installed DirectX you will need to do so.
The DirectX runtime can be downloaded from the Microsoft website. (www.microsoft.com/directx).

New Features Summary

1) When energy levels get very low, you start to lose kit from your ship.
Each time a piece of kit is lost, a 'xxxx Damaged' message appears.
I seem to recall this was a feature in one of the elite versions, but cant remember if it was in
the BBC version or not. Most of the useful kit can be lost, which can make life quite interesting if
you do survive a heavy skirmish.

2) I have added some new bits of kit which are fully functional :

a) A ship identification mechanism. Pressing 'I' in flight, identifies the next ship that is targetted.
The kit has to be purchased before it can be used. You get an 'ID : xxxx' message when a ship is
identified. All ships are identifiable, apart from planets and suns.

b) An engine accelerator. This allows the speed of the ship to be increased, and typically means you
can now outrun vipers etc. Again, the kit has to be purchased, and is permanently 'on'.

c) Retro rockets. Pressing 'R' in-flight allows the ship to immediately go in 'reverse' for a
short distance. I think this feature was in the Atari ST version. Kit also has to be purchased, and is
only good for 20 'burns' before you have to buy another one, so typically used in emergencies only.

d) Cloaking device. Pressing 'Q' in-flight switches on the cloaking device. A message confirms that Cloaking
is on / off, and during flight, a cloaking active message is displayed. Note that the cloaking
device consumes energy when it is on, and it will automatically switch off if energy levels are too low. Also
note that when cloaked, there is a risk that other ships will collide with you.

e) Limit Police (under game options). This allows the default limit of 4 Vipers to be removed.

f) The universe is no longer limited to 20 'items' in flight at one time, and can now handle up to 70 items.



New keys you can use...

R - Engage Retro Rockets
I - Engage ship identification mechanism
Q - Engage cloaking device (Q also turns it off again).
Space - Speed up (If the accelerator is fitted, this will allow the ship to accelerate to its
new 'faster' speed.




How to install

1) Unpack the zip file into the same directory that you have installed the release 1 of E-TNK.

2) Run Elitev1a.EXE - You are now running the updated version.




Zip Contents

1) Elitev1a.EXE - A new .exe file, which contains the new features. It has a different name from the
release 1 .EXE, so that you do not lost the original .EXE

2) CF.NKC - A commander file, with all of the new kit purchased and available to use. Also has huge
number of credits, and custom lasers. You may see a reference to a cloaking device in the kit list.
This is not operational yet, but I am working on it.

3) Al3933.dll - Allegro library file

4) Readme-v1a.txt (this file)

I picked up an archimedes a3000 recently

I found it has a HDD, with elite installed

But when I run it, it asks for words from the manual

Anyone got a link to an archie elite manual ?

I don't have any blanks disks and I don't currently know how to xfer from a PC to an archimedes formatted disk anyway

I was just looking for a quick and simple solution to see how the installed s/w worked on an original archie
