Acorn-style font (not Mode 7 Teletext)

Post by mez » Tue Aug 14, 2012 11:37 am

I have made a monospace font that can make your computer look a bit more like the classic 8-bit machines. There are two zip files attached to this post:

1) acorn_full_nostalgia.zip -> this archive contains the standard TrueType font file with 3000+ glyphs. To use it in Windows, extract the .TTF font file from the archive then right-click on it and select "Install for All Users".

2) acorn.psf.gz -> this is a special console font for the Linux command line only (outside of X-Windows) with a limited 512 glyphs. Just copy the file directly into the /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts folder and use "chmod 644 acorn.psf.gz" to set the permissions to be the same as the others. You can switch to it dynamically by using the "unicode_start acorn" command (or perhaps "setfont acorn"?). You should be able to see all the glyphs by using the "showconsolefont" command.

These font files are my own creation and can be freely distributed. Back to the 1980s! :)

IMPORTANT: Please see my January 2019 comment below for getting this font recognised by Windows console apps.

I've recently had fun (!) getting this recognised by Windows console apps, so here are the full instructions:

1) Extract the amended .TTF font file from inside the downloaded .ZIP file.
2) Install the .TTF font file by right-clicking on it and doing "Install for All Users".
3) Run "regedit" as an Administrator and go to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Console\TrueTypeFont section.
4) Add a new string value for "000=Acorn Full Nostalgia".
5) Sign out of Windows and sign back in again.

You should now be able to select this font in these Windows console apps:
  • Command Prompt
  • PowerShell
  • Terminal
