Photos of your Acorn setup, Back In The Day?

Post by LordVaderUK » Sat Mar 28, 2020 12:51 pm

I found a thread on an Atari forum (don’t hate me) where people had posted photos of their setups back in the 1980s. Think lots of beige furniture, swirly wallpaper and orange carpets 😬 But some splendid images of “brand new” computers and peripherals too, with their young and enthusiastic users.

Is there a similar thread here (I’ve searched but couldn’t find one)? If not, while we are all in lockdown this could be a good time to dig out those 80s photo albums, scan or snap the original photos, and post them here...

Looking forward to seeing the results!

Hi,

nice idea... :D

You better underline in boldtext the part: photos of their setups back in the 1980s.

You can wait after a while the first one pops up with a pic of a recent setup... :shock:

<Yoda mode>
Idea like :wink:
Achieve, hard :|
</Yoda mode>

Me, like a fair number of other StarDotters, either did not think about taking any photos (or parents did not take any), have since lost any that were taken, or may not have had any Acorn machines back then...

Heck, until I jointed my first ‘retro’ computer forum, I had not taken any photos of any of my computers, let alone “my set-up”. I do wish I had thought about it though.

If any members do happen to have any photos and post them up, I sure fellow members will enjoy looking at them :D

Mark

PS Atari Age or Atari Forum or both! As obviously I’ve missed that particular thread #-o

Just sneaked into the corner of this photo (I cropped out the rest of it).

That’s the sort of thing! I am currently locked down at my partner’s house, not my own place, so can’t dig through the photo albums for a while yet. I might ask my parents if they’ve got any - as they are almost certainly the ones who would have taken photos at that time, presumably while a spotty, irascible, difficult 15 year old version of me moaned and whinged about them being in my room :lol:

The last pic is a snapshot of a video...

Another one. Had to position my phone at an angle, as the gloss emulsion isn't conducive to being photographed.

The observant will notice a copy of one of the Play It Again, Sam 2 tapes stashed in the back of my radio cassette. (It had space to store a third tape in the back).

And yeah, I destroyed the function key strip, although I can't remember how. I didn't look after my stuff when I was nine.

My Sister has a great pile of photos inherited from our late Mum & Dad that she is sorting through.

She came up with a pic of my 18th Birthday (May 1988) with the Beeb in the background sitting under it's cover.

I suspect there are more but this one happened to be near the top of the pile.
Andy18.jpeg

It was a Model B with a Watford shadow RAM board and had an external RAM/ROM expansion and a dual 40/80 TEAC drives. The Cheese-wedge as I recall was a Teletext Adapter.

Much appreciated all the same :lol:

I spend many hours on that setup since we got the Beeb in 1981. I remember some long late nights in 1984-85 playing Elite and finally got there and sent off for the Elite badge that I still have today. Starship Command, Frak!, Chuckie Egg, Castle Quest, Speech! and Dare Devil Dennis were other favourites. :D I did a fair bit of programming on it too in BASIC, Assembler and even learned FORTH on it. Pity I gave all my disks away when we sold the Beeb. #-o

This is me at Christmas 1982 with the new Beeb, connected to the big TV.
Photo 239.jpg
Not sure of the year, but now have a dedicated desk, portable TV, and single PACE floppy drive.
Photo 802.jpg
And finally by Christmas 1986 it's in a Viglen case and we have a CUB monitor. (Name that game?)

I love this one because almost exactly the same scene happened in our house when our machine arrived. Set up on the coffee table, with the tape recorder next to it.

"My" setup was the computer room at school, I didn't get my own kit until a year at university, having gone there naively expecting to continue to have access to computers, and finding none there. (shoulda gone to Teeside Poly, grumble grumble....)

What's the computer on the left, under the posters on the wall?
