SMS with a Beeb?

Post by blackwitch »

Hi all.

I was just wondering. An early morning thought.... lol

Is it possible to send and receive SMS text messages through a BBC?

I would have thought it would be but I guess connecting it to a network would be the main problem.

Any thoughts?

I played with the module described here: https://raymondtunning.wordpress.com/20 ... -and-data/

It was connected to the Godil serial port of my Atom 2k15 and I managed to get it working. After that I never used it again

Use an old Nokia or SonyEricsson phone - many of these had serial interfaces with a MAX232 style converter in the serial lead to convert to true RS232.
As far as sending SMS is concerned, look at the source code for Gnokii.

Note that by "old" I'm talking about pre-2005ish, phones which never came with a USB cable.

SonyEricsson T610, T630, K700 all have serial interfaces - a look at https://www.developershome.com/sms/gnokiiIntro.asp lists other models which might have a serial interface.

using an old phone maybe an issue as I think that 3G is gonna be shut off by 2023

even the link i posted to the sim800c module only supports up to 4G which will eventually be phased out but it should be around for a while to come

The old phones I mentioned are 2G only. 2G will outlive 3G due to better range, and its ability to provide slow but reliable data service (e.g. hand held card terminals) and to allow for fallback for voice. (So you can still make that 999 call with no 3/4/5G signal)

Some 2G bandwidth is being pulled for newer stuff, but not all of it.
