Rainbird titles on the BBC

Post by daniel_gsp » Mon Feb 25, 2019 9:09 am

Hi everyone,

As some of you know I'm trying to complete the Level 9 catalog on the BBC, and I have to say that after years on the lookout I haven't seen ant of the Rainbird releases for the BBC on sale!

I'm pretty sure they are out there since other games released at a later time did see the sunlight, I'm just wondering if there was something at the time that caused these 3 games to be so freaking hard to come buy these days :)

Rich Hewison would be the one to ask. His site doesn't list the Rainbird re-releases as being available for the BBC, though.

The Centre for Computing History has a "test disk" for the BBC/Rainbird Knight Orc listed in their catalogue alongside the Atari version... http://www.computinghistory.org.uk/det/ ... night-Orc/

Ahh, yes, will send him a message about that, it would be a good thing to be able to remove those 3 from my wanted list on the BBC and be on the lookout for only 4 more games for completion :)

Woah, we could do with that archiving for sure!

Hopefully they can find staff with time to do that, but I'm under the impression that will be difficult. Last time I spoke with them I couldn't get a scan of na A4 sheet of paper :)

Could someone who lives locally pop in to The Centre for Computing History and ask them to retrieve it from the archive for an examination ?
I'm sure they'd love to help if someone made a personal appearance....

Wouldn't have thought it would've been protected either, being a "test disk", but ISTR the later Level 9 games usually just had two files occupying the same space, so that *COPY from one drive to the other would result in it being full, so a straight sector dump would suffice...

Thanks for alerting us to the existence of the test disk, Gareth - we were able to archive it over the weekend and a download is available here.

Hurrah! :D

Well done. I never cease to be amazed by the work of the Acorn/BBC community.
