Post by kenton » Mon Oct 10, 2011 11:32 pm

Hey y'all. Beebdroid, the BBC Micro emulator for Android, is now available to everyone on time-limited public beta. Give it a go and let us know what you think.

Go check it out here: http://www.littlefluffytoys.com/?p=441

Due for release at Replay Expo, assuming Dave gets his arse in gear and announces it ;)

Ace, it no longer falls over when I turn me phone on its side! :D

Reckon you'll get the sound seen to before the full release?

Map it properly to the Desire Z keyboard and I'll think about it ... :P

(actually, I'll send you a PM about Replay now)

Only had chance for a quick go as I'm at work, but the effects on Arcadians sound great. =D>

This is excellent stuff!

Hi. Tried on my HTC Desire. Not sure if whether you're targetting particular platforms, but on the Desire it runs very slowly.. about 50% of Beeb speed I'd say. Of course, this could be because it's beta :)

Will gladly give more detailed feedback if wanted /needed.
I'm going to ..

It probably won't run on the Desire. It's too old and slow. You need a modern fast Android phone. When we ported B-Em from Linix, it was running at about 7 frames per second on a Nexus S. It's been optimised to hell already. Not much further room for improvement. Sorry :-)

@Dave: sound should be OK. Let us know if you're having issues.

Beebdroid on the HTC Desire is definitely slower than it *ought* to be... I suspect an important but not frequently used OpenGL API has a slow implementation on that platform. There might be something we can do about this but not before someone loans me a Desire. :/

Kenton fantastic little add to my phone.. One problem though.. Which you probally already now about.. Its on the slow side? May be its the phone i used but it is alittle slow.. Is there any chance in future builds to add a speed control ? Whats funny about the Android app is tells people a little history about Acorn and ARM bet you some people dont even realise that ARM was made by the company who made the best home computer ever made BBC lol..

One more thing as i dont want to seem like a pestering git lol.. Is there anyway of emulating a Master in this ?? :)

We intend to finally put it on Github and open-source it this week, so anyone who thinks they can improve the speed of it is welcome to try. Additional features like Master support can be added too, by anyone who feels like it :-)

There's no reason it shouldn't work on the KF, but you'll need to bork it so you can install from other locations. You can change the KF so it has Android Market, then it should just appear.

So I wasn't sure how to install apps that weren't from the Amazon shop at first
but it turned out to be really easy - you allow unapproved programs - then I just downloaded from you site and installed it from my downloads list.

It worked first time in portrait and rotated.

The speed feels great and the sounds are especially good.

Love the keys lighting up as well!

!Great accomplishment!

So if I wanted to program my own games how do I do that - is it written in 'c'?

As Android apps can now run on the Blackberry PlayBook, does anyone have the necessary skills and software to convert the Beebdroid app?

Thanks!

I need to replace my Nokia phone which is falling apart and I would love to have BeebDroid on my next phone, so I am interested in getting an Android phone, can anyone tell me if Beebdroid will work on the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus and if does it work well?

Thanks
Matthew

Or, indeed, generic keyboard support? I just got a Asus Transformer Prime and they keyboard is totally ignored. It'd be brilliant if that worked.

Seconded.

The source code is available, so I guess there's little reason for kb support not to be added by anyone with the skills & time.

GFX are fine, but the audio is a little bit broken up most of the time. Still a great effort though, well done!

My father in law purchased the VERSUS Touchpad 7 Tablet from PC World recently for my wife's birthday.

Therefore, I couldn't resist installing BeebDroid on it :D

It works pretty well, but the sound comes out in a rather jittery manner. Wonder if there is a list of Android devices which BeebDroid works flawlessly on (tough call I know, there's so many of these devices now!)

Works on Galaxy S3 under ICS, but sound is jittery, as above.

I noticed the slowdown too on my Galaxy Nexus. I've had a go at improving it a little. Here's me playing Arcadians and Alien8...

http://youtu.be/nemAmgZdPiY

Fiddling with the Runnable that schedules the next 'tick' of the BBC smoothed things out a bit, plus i've stopped the button images being rendered on the keyboard and touchpad (so it's just wireframe). I wonder if making the keys surface into a GL surface would help, but that's a complete guess. I used to get slowdowns to 20fps, but now get 50fps (ish) on the GNex and a Zenithink C93 10" tablet.

The joystick works because the GNex has USB On The Go support, and i'd expect other controllers to work too (if a controller works with SnesDroid then there should be a pretty good chance). The keys config is stored in one file on the SD card : //SDcard/Beebdroid/config/beebdroidgamecontrols.txt. This is basically the contents of Controllers.java copied into a text file in a certain format, so the existing code works as it did.

Put .ssd files in //SDcard/Beebdroid/files/disks/ and they'll appear in the menu shown in the video. Must have Cylon Attack and Palace Of Magic :)

At the moment this is very much a work in progress :) Alot of the changes that i've made are messy or incomplete, and this certainly isn't anywhere close to the quality of the original LFC release which is a polished end product.

I've not added anything sinister, however i've given the app permission to write to the device's SD card, and for it to 'keep the phone awake' while running.

All of the source is here : https://github.com/DuncanHodson/Beebdroid

The APK file is here : https://github.com/DuncanHodson/Beebdro ... ct2012.apk (Click the "Raw" button at the right hand side near "History" and it'll start downloading)

If anyone would like to try it that would be nice, and if you could post back here if you think it's improved (or worse) that would be great :D

I came across your enhanced version of Beebdroid today, and it works great on my old Evo 4G. Thanks for making it available! The feature to be able to load other ssd images from the sd card, rather than being limited to the original subset, is particularly useful. Perhaps you could contact the original developers to have your changes incorporated into the original version.

One small future enhancement that would be nice is for the list of disk images to be sorted alphabetically, especially with a long list of disk images.

I don't know how I missed this before, I had a go, but Android/Eclipse is not my preferred combination (I've never used either before).

Your version worked (nearly) as I had hoped.

I seem to have a slightly corrupt key layout, but other than that, it plays Carnivale and my new Rally-X demo.

Thanks

Hi Kenton

This looks good, might have to put it on my xperia Z and see how well it runs.

On an unrelated note, did you know your site is down (the one in the first post in the thread) and just gives a white blank page?
