On iOS and iPadOS (which are what I was digressing about upthread), you can’t really avoid using the App Store.
Sometimes you have to, as with the iOS edition of BBC BASIC for SDL 2.0 which can't qualify for the App Store (as a programming language which uses the entire screen for output). It's admittedly a pain to use alternative distribution mechanisms, and there can be limits on the total number of users, but it is achievable.
I am suffering from 'cognitive decline' and depression. If you have a comment about the style or tone of this message please report it to the moderators by clicking the exclamation mark icon, rather than complaining on the public forum.
