Cosma - Galactic Intruder & Space Kingdom

Post by richardtoohey » Sat Mar 23, 2013 8:13 am

Not quite submitted yet, but will scan the instructions and tapes and maybe a raw file or two for "someone" (cough) to get to UEF (if the tapes don't disintegrate!)

These are from the last batch of my old tapes from BITD that have just been mailed out to me.

Anyone else already upload or have these or remember them? I can't remember them, so not expecting them to be great!

Can't find them in Google, and the only Cosma titles in LLL (Lee's Long List) seem to be "World Cup Manager" and "Small Text Processor" so maybe they are new to the archives?

The two games are from "Cosma Sales Ltd", "Part of the Cosma Group", Witney, Oxon, and "(c) SOFTWARE FOR ALL 1983". If that helps!

Edit - found this about Cosma Group ...

Hopefully will get some time over Easter ... work, jury service, visitors, and so much sunshine  I've had to go out and about enjoying it!

The 2 tapes are sitting on my desk here, so it's the very next project involving moving wires and tape machines around.

I think anyone waiting will be disappointed - but good to get in the archives if I/we can.

Raw files ... my Master turned its noise up at the real tapes, let alone these raw files, so not sure if you'll have any luck.

With Galactic Invader, I eventually (lots of rewinding to get past Data? messages) got the real Master to load all 24 blocks (one file, INTRUDER) but it just said "Bad Program" at the end of that. With Space Kingdom it refused to believe that there was anything on the tape, no matter what I did with tone & volume controls.

Space Kingdom did not Zip up to under 5Mb, so it's bzip2 format ...

converted your .raw to .wav, and it went straight into a UEF! it did not like the raw.

also got Bad Proggy :( when you look through the file, it seems to be half basic :? maybe needs a loader before this file, with something like *L. INTRUDER 1920, PAGE=&2000, RUN :-s

your other bzip2 file, my Win7 says NO :x will try my winXP later :-k
EDIT or just link me to the .raw later

Thank you, you are a star! =D>

Here's a screenshot of Space Kingdom ... can't say I remember it AT ALL, but maybe it was a labour of love for the programmer and maybe one day they'll find it in the archives and be happy. :D

Off to have a look at Galactic Intruder(s) next ...

Galactic Intruder - head-scratching ... I think you are very close, and can't see why it doesn't quite work ...

I've listened to the tape again, and I can't hear any loader program (not an accurate test, I grant you!)

Just seems to be this ...

INTRUDER 24 2410 00000BF0 00000BF0

BF0+2410 goes to &3000 ... and it's a MODE 2 game, so it fits.

Line 25 copies char defs from 1D00 - and that definitely works (if you copy & run line 25 then do VDU224 etc. you get the game graphics) - so it is expecting to load at &BF0.

There are a couple of CALLs to e.g. G1 and FF - and if you look at the defined addresses, they make sense - looks like they are jumping into discrete routines.

Was wondering if it assumed OS0.1 or 1.0 or BASIC1 so got a bit side-tracked on sourcing those and getting them to work in Beebem.

Don't think the game merits all this attention but does feel like we're very close!

OS 1.0 and BASIC 1 get me this far ... it's a lot more playable, but the characters at the top come down, down, down ... so not quite there.

Beebem (? or something) doesn't seem to like OS 0.1 and BASIC 1 ROM combination (I get "No Language ROM?")

If I could get OS 0.1 and BASIC 1 running, then maybe it would be case closed!

Hi Richard,

Just taken a look at Galactic Intruder an it seems that &BF0 is the correct loading address for the file and &E00 is the address for running the basic as it is in mode 2.

However, the instructions clearly state CH."" which would cause a bad program error as there is no basic at the start of the file.
The only conclusion I can think of is that some other basic file should be loading first to set up a *Load and Page=&E00, Old, Run routine and may also contain instructions, loading screen and possibly some setup code for the sprites.

Is there no chance that other files are on the tape? as even if this was a OS issue, the same bad program error would occur regardless from chaining the file in the image posted.

regards,
Mick.

Hi, Mick.

I've listened to the tape a few times and can't hear anything more than one obvious file - I can't get the tape working with the Master I currently have set up. The raw file I uploaded is the tape from start to finish.

I'm not 100% convinced the loading instructions are right. If you set up a (virtual) machine with the BASIC 1 ROM (OS 1.0 or 1.2 makes no difference) and no other ROMs (to avoid having to fiddle with PAGE), and do */ ... the game loads and runs fine (apart from the one glitch of the repeated character that slowly fills up the screen.)

Do the same with BASIC 2 ROM - no joy - Bad Program.

If you look at the code at BF0 it is calling into the BASIC ROM (if I read it correctly) - so that's why the game works with BASIC 1.

I'll try B-em (thanks for the hint, Tom) with OS 0.1 and BASIC 1 to see if the game works any better or if CH."" will work. That will eliminate my theory one way or the other.

And then see if I can work out what needs to be done with Beebem to make it host OS 0.1 and BASIC 1.

Bingo - works fine on B-em as Model B with OS 0.1.

*RUN works (*/ does not, guess it wasn't in OS 0.1)

CH."" gives Bad Program ... so I think instructions were wrong (or there's a missing loader I can't find ...) But the instructions, graphics, sounds etc. all seem to work ...

And working on Beebem with hacked code similar to B-em's ... I've not done it at all right as you can see from FPS: 0 (more reading of AUG required!) - but enough of OS 0.1 and BASIC 1 are running to get it working.

Here is a disk image I have made of Space Kingdom from the uef image here.
I think it works properly, but someone may need to play test it.

Any further progress with making Galactic Intruder OS 1.2 friendly?

I don't think so but it is a bit hard to tell from that screenshot ... the packaging certainly looks a lot different but hard to read any of the text.
