Any interest?

This is what I've been able to recover, so far. (They're still in Solidisk format images, but at least I've been able to get the menu listings I'd built!)

Always interested in what other people have. Sometimes you may have some loading screens or instructions that are missing from disk hacks elsewhere so it would be nice if you could post the disk images here so I can compare with my collection.

I second that.

And I'm interested in finding an Eagle Empire that works with my Beebem, so I'm interested in that one in particular (to start with.)

Thanks.

Mick.
Do I just attach images, or is there some submission method I'm not aware of?

My images are currently Solidisk double-density images, but I can extract the files in file + "inf" and upload as a zip, which might be easier for people...
e.g. Eagle Empire is

Code: Select all

$ ls *Eag*
G.Eagemp G.Eagemp.inf G.Eaglemp G.Eaglemp.inf
$ cat G.Eagemp.inf ; echo
G.Eagemp 3000 5900 Locked CRC=4A6A
$ cat G.Eaglemp.inf ; echo
G.Eaglemp 1900 1900 Locked CRC=E526
Which corresponds, on disk, to

Code: Select all

$ beeb info ~/bt/eagemp.ssd
Disk title: (1) Disk size: &320 - 200K
Boot Option: 0 (None) File count: 2

Filename: Lck Lo.add Ex.add Length Sct
G.Eaglemp L 001900 001900 000400 02D
G.Eagemp L 003000 005900 002B00 002

It starts to play but after a minute it seems to crash with total screen corruption.

I will be in a position for post my original hacked tape copy of Eagle Empire here (hopefully) in a few weeks, but I can remember it playing up BITD on my old BBC B and I think interference from other games was the cause back then and I had saved some code to the game to erase any problems with the game. However, it may be some fault with Beeb-Em that is causing the problem but I won't know for sure until I get my original disk hack copied over.

if you can't image the whole disks but can copy files then these would be worth a look.

Games 1

Curse
Pilot
Racer
Joyset

Games 2

Zany Kong

Games 3

Ghouls II ??

Games 4

Battle Zone ??

Games 6

Ski Run
Tanks
Sceptical

Games 7

Yellow Cave
Save City
Mission

Games 8

Vampire

E00 Disk 2

Starman

Trivial Pursuits disk

Blobo

I bet I have some of these under different names but wouldn't mind a look (if you get the time).

Sceptical on Games 6 will be 'Bored Sceptical' from 'Bored of the Rings' which was a 'bonus' spoof Teletext system.

Anyway, there's a lot of interest here! Look forward to downloading the images soon.

Welcome to my world - crashes on a real Master, crashes on B-em, crashes on Beebem for Windows ... but it works fine on a real BBC B. I've also seen what Michael says re. it does something to a real machine that means you really *have* to turn off the machine before you do anything else.

OK, I'm not sure what the etiquette is, here, so here's games1 as a set of SSDs (1 per game).

Notes: Fire-Bug dies with Bad Program error. Maybe it's loading into DFS space that didn't hurt SOlidisk but is hurting Acorn. Dunno.
Pharoahs Curse dies badly on BeebEm but works perfectly on a real Beeb B
The Hobbit generates bad data for the first line of text, but otherwise works fine. I think that used to happen in the 80s as well :-)
Pyramid dies with Bad Program error. Not sure why.

All other games appear to load and play.

Code: Select all

Both Fire-bug and Pyramid are crashing because of the !BOOT
CHAINing the files bypassing the !BOOT, they work fine.
If you first CHAINed a loader which has CLOSE#0 or *FX119 or even A=GET before CHAINing the other file, then all should* be fine...

Good to see the old Tennis game here with the option screen in red as I had it BITD and not green as on the net. However, since this never was released as a tape, which is correct?

Huh. Interesting. I wouldn't ever have come across that in the "real world" 'cos my games disks had menus, and the menu did a GET.

25 years on, and I still learn oddities about the Beeb :-)

I have copied the fix from B-em to Beebem - hopefully it will get picked up for the next version of Beebem:

Second followup on this...

Fire-bug and Pyramid both work after a close#0 so now my !BOOT for those 2 disks is

Code: Select all

10CLOSE#0:CHAIN"...."
RUN
The Hobbit "1st line" corruption was a similar thing, but here it needed a *FX21 so that !BOOT now reads

Code: Select all

10CLOSE#0
20*FX21
30*HOBBIT
RUN
And that means all of those images now work!

This is also gonna help a lot on games2 where a number of programs suffer the same issue (loading at &1100, and so being corrupted 'cos a filehandle is open). I think I might make this my standard !BOOT for these images, going forward!

Games 2

Code: Select all

Atlantis.ssd Galactic_Commander.ssd Pinball.ssd
Attack_On_Alpha_Centauri.ssd Gorf.ssd PlanetFall.ssd

Beeb_Art.ssd Knight_Lore.ssd Rocket_Raid.ssd
CC_Chess.ssd L.ssd Starship_Command.ssd
Cowboy_Shootout.ssd Microbe.ssd Stock_Car.ssd

Fortress.ssd Pedro.ssd Zany_Kong.ssd
Oddities: Defender works in BeebEm but on a real Beeb it displays the landscape, and then stops. Similarly, Fortress runs in BeebEm but doesn't update the screen on my Beeb. I wonder if these are related to my STL 2Meg128 card and maybe somehow it's forcing it into Shadow mode or something stupid like that. Hmm.

Other oddity is "Moonbase Alpha"; this loads just fine in BeebEm but doesn't on my Beeb. I need to look deeper into that one.

And now I'm running into trouble; the RETURN key on my keyboard has died! Have you any idea how hard it is to test things without a RETURN key? It's definitely the key 'cos if I short the pins out on the underside of the keyboard then the Beeb registers the press properly. *sigh*.

(Disk 3 probably won't be until next weekend; depends on how much free time I'll have in the evenings)

Could use Ctrl-M in *some* cases, maybe? Works in Beebem (e.g. *HELP<Ctrl-M>), haven't tried on a real BBC ...

That's what I've been doing in BASIC. It even works in some games (eg White Knight). But it's not too helpful as a "fire!" key :-)

Games 4.
"Frak hacked" appears to be some alternate images and names that I found and hacked together (you'll have to excuse my teenage self!). Eagle Empire appears to have some odd corruption issue. If I remember correctly, this was true decades ago as well. Repton 2 has the "SPEECH!" load screen :-)

Code: Select all

3D_Oxo.ssd Ghostbusters_Music.ssd Revs.ssd
Acornsoft_Maze.ssd Gremlins.ssd Scrabble.ssd
Astro_Blaster.ssd Gyroscope.ssd Sinistar.ssd
Atic_Atac.ssd Hopper.ssd Snooker.ssd
BattleZone.ssd Magic_Mushrooms.ssd Tarzan.ssd
Beach_Head.ssd Match_Day.ssd Toccata_Music.ssd
Breakout.ssd Maze_In_Space.ssd Volcano.ssd
Dodgem.ssd Oblivion.ssd Wall_M_In.ssd
Eagle_Empire.ssd Paras.ssd Web_Runner.ssd
Emerald_Isle.ssd Pass_Go.ssd White_Knight_12.ssd
Escape_From_Pulsar_7.ssd Repton_1.ssd Yie_Ar_Kung_Fu.ssd
Frak_hacked.ssd Repton_2.ssd

Possibly; it has characters such as "Dildo" and monsters looking liking spread-eagled women calling "HELP!"

Games5. Chrysalis doesn't seem to work on BeebEm but runs on the real Beeb. I was impressed that the digital music stuff worked properly on BeebEm!

Code: Select all

737_Flight_Sim.ssd Eagle.ssd Karate_Combat.ssd Zelda_BugEyes.ssd
Alien_8.ssd Flip.ssd Lord_Of_The_Rings.ssd
Chrysalis.ssd Genesis_Probe.ssd PowerPlay.ssd
Digital_Music.ssd Jet_Boat.ssd Super_Pool.ssd

Game 6 - Fairytale Adv
Could this be 'Fairytale Adventure' by Molimerx - a "known missing" from the archive?

I don't know who it is by, but it's set in Enid Blyton's "Enchanted Forest", with The Faraway Tree, Moonface and his slide and so on.

Code: Select all

  Fairytale Adventure

Welcome to the Enchanted Forest. You are now in Fairytale Land, and you must obtain valuable souvenirs of your visit."

Disc 7

Code: Select all

Apocalypse.ssd Eldorado_Gold.ssd Missile_Base.ssd Sorceror.ssd
Bruce_Lee.ssd Evil_Dead.ssd Mission.ssd Statix.ssd
Canyon.ssd Glider.ssd Paranoid_Pete.ssd Strike_Harrier.ssd
Citadel.ssd Hyper_Sports.ssd Ravenskull.ssd Strykers_Run.ssd
Death_Watch.ssd Inheritence.ssd Road_Runner.ssd Ultron.ssd
Demon_Decorator.ssd Jedi_Warrior.ssd Save_City.ssd Yellow_Caves.ssd
Detective.ssd Jump_Jet.ssd Shuttle_Sim.ssd
The Apocalypse loader really needs work. I clearly hacked on it for the Solidisk DDFS. Basically it loads 2 ROMs into SWR; the main program ROM into slot C and the data ROM (depending on which area you chose) into slot D. I made use of the Solidisk fact that loading to D8000 would load into slot D :-) The game then switches to *ROM and loads the rest of itself from RFS (I can't believe I did that; I must have just kludged the *LOAD commands). If you manually load APOCRM into one bank and then the relevant region ROM into another bank then it should run. (I didn't bother fixing the loader for this image; I want to get onto other disks!)
