Misc BBC/Electron Roms, for checking

Post by Arcadian » Thu Sep 08, 2016 2:51 pm

Here are almost 850 ROM images, for checking against existing online archives (JGH - are you reading? :) )

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2378

These ROMs came from the Slogger 'haul' a number of years ago. Bear in mind there's every chance that some of the Slogger variants make be unreleased/development/non-functional versions.

Edit: it appears these may NOT be the roms from the Slogger haul after all (scroll further down the thread for info!). I'll endeavour to get the Slogger rom images preserved one way or another!

Edit 2 - 8th January 2018: The correct ROM dumps by Greg (regregex) have now been located and uploaded to this post as RomDumpsByRegregex_FromDM2009SloggerHaul.zip. See post below for list.

I should note that I believe I have a few more roms to dump relating to Slogger's own software e.g. different versions of the Click eprom for the Electron ... need to locate the eproms first though (hopefully it won't take another 7 years this time! ;) ).

Thanks for these, but doesn't include any of the ROMs that I was interested in :( There's only one DDOS 3.45, the other 3.16 and 3.36 are still mia. Also no Challenger ROMs and as you say the various Click versions are missing along with many of the T2xxx ROMs.

There are some interesting ones though such as ROM versions of SuperPool, Overdrive, Algebraic Manipulation, Peeko Computer, Creative Graphics apparently by ACP. Did ACP ever market these?

No, the photos showed a ROM labelled CHAL200 suggesting there's a later version.

Ah ok, I missed that - I've never seen a later version than 1.03

Hmm, that's strange - I wonder why some have been missed. I thought I'd included them all in the boxes I passed over for dumping, but perhaps I retained some of them?!?

I've excluded the ROMs that Greg marked as bad/containing errors (see list below) but the T2, Click, Challenger etc roms aren't included in those sets either.

Nigel can you list all of the 'interesting' Eproms from the photos that you believe are missing and I'll see if I can dig them out.

The Challenger 2.00 Rom may well have been the ADFS version as I'm 100% that the haul included at least one version of that.

I don't see many of the dumped ROMs in any of the photos, seem to be completely unrelated.

Anyway, of interest are:
ddos 3.36
ddos 3.16
chal200
click
stop press

And anything with a slogger label is missing:
elkman
printer rom
starword
pdg
starspell
t2sd
t2edfs
starmon
starstore
t2p3
t2p4
t2cu
sedfs
stargraph

Really?

Ah right - it's possible these AREN'T the rom dumps from Slogger then!!

They might have been a general selection of rom images that Greg had assembled from the web and various other sources?!

Coming to think of it - I think he transferred the Slogger roms electronically via a file sharing service - as opposed to CDR.

Okeydokey - looks as if the dumping session in Bolton in November may be back on the cards! (Assuming Greg doesn't still hold copies of the original dumps!)

Thanks, that's a great collection. Lots of Electron expansion ROMs, some clearly meant for ROMBOX and ROMBOX+ too. Also interesting to see Starspell/View and Starspell/Starword combos were available in combined 32K ROMs.
There's also the later versions of DDOS 3.x6 which I can easily add to MAME.
The Challenger 3 v2.00 ROMs will be interesting to compare with earlier versions too, maybe it'll support DDCPM.

I never managed to get your v2.00 working in the MAME Plus3, but this v2.10 works great =D>

I mind a decade ago, it never worked /looked good on ElkulatorV1 either :?
here is screen shot of it working on my Plus3:
dfs2elk.jpg
scr
just had a play with this newer one ACP DFS2.10, and it's a :(
it seems not to load big files, like Palace Of Magic loading screen, it either loads 1/3 or 1/2, then gives disc Err14
also does not play the original 51/4" elk version (now on 31/2" with ADI rom) of Life Of Repton
so, it's now sitting next to ADFS1 on the naughty step

There were also fdi's with source code, where is that? And documentation... Was there source code for the challenger rom?

Phill also imaged them with 22DISK about six years ago - I'm not sure if I have copies of these images though.

I did have a few copies of the manuals for DDCPM - I remember giving a couple away but I'm sure I kept one. There's a possibility it might be in long-term storage which means it might be several months before I'm able to locate it.

Ah, I've found the files from Phill.

Don't think they're a full set of images after all, but I'll post what I have below.

First up ... slogger.tar.gz

Notes from Phill, 13-Feb-2012:

"Just so this is somewhere else but my hard disk....here's what I have extracted so far. File is a Unix/Linux compressed tar archive, should open fine with winzip.

Couple of things to note :

clk100 and clkdoc where extracted directly from the slogger disks, I don't think that I have got the sector ordering quite correct in my disk definition, so the files might have out of order sections, will work on this.

clk104 and cpm (master click src) were extracted by first copying them to a standard Acorn CP/M disk, I'm reasonably confident that the sector ordering for this is correct as I took it from an official Acorn application note. "

Second up ... cpmsrc.zip

Notes from Phill, 13-Feb-2012:

"I have worked out a definition for 22 disk that allows me to copy the source directly off the Slogger DDCPM disks, which should make things *MUCH* easier, attached is the DD CP/M source files.

Now if only I could make a working DD CP/M format floppy....the format program allows me to select to format double density, performs the format ok, but when I try and catalog the disk, it reports bad sectors."

And finally ... SloggerCPMDisks.tar.gz

Notes from Phill, 14-Feb-2012:

Here's the disks I have managed to copy, a couple of them I couldn't get any sensible data off (bad sectors), but I think we have at least one copy of everything.

Again unix tar.gz

Yes, I still have the fdi's that I never got round to investigate due to things happening here at that time and for a long time did nothing with BBCs... A 7 year wait until an update about this slogger stuff is nothing if life gets in the way! ;-)

So the Challenger 3 DD BIOS v1.01 + DDCPM v1.01.fdi is the one I was curious about... (esp. because in my disassembled version, there was an issue with FORMAT not working sometimes depending on moving sections of code around and I must just have overlooked some small detail)

As to the ROM images, I checked 525 and 527: 527 is 32K, first half is identical with 525 so is Challenger 2.00, will be interesting to check that out, then the 2nd half of 527 is "CHADFS 300M (C) Slogger 1987". So finally ADFS for the challenger. Might be the first time ADFS becomes palatable :)

So that last batch including "Challenger 3 DD BIOS v1.01 + DDCPM v1.01.fdi" doesn't seem to be included in the extracted-files zips, in the SloggerCPMDisks.tar.gz I only see CPM stuff, so the format of that last batch of fdi's is still unknown? I may have a look then this month.

Edit: Wait, there is 'Double Density Bios V1.01' (in file cpsrc101/chbios.mac) so it looks like cpsrc101 is from "Challenger 3 DD BIOS v1.01 + DDCPM v1.01.fdi" ? If so it means no source code for the standard challenger ROM, that would be disappointing.

FormDDCPM should format a disk to Slogger DDCPM format, single density for the first three tracks and double density for the rest of the disk. I added a specific tweek to ImgToDisk to write images to these mixed-density disks. I'm not on an Acorn machine at the mo, but from memory I think you would use:
ImgToDisk infile 0 G:2:1:2:80:2:10:00 -mix

Is it any different to these?

At that link is also RdDDCPM and WrDDCPM which read and write DDCPM disk images.

From looking at the strings in there, it looks the same, so what you have is Z80-CPM Challenger 1.00 and 1.01 programs, and that is what the zips with separate files (cpmsrc.zip etc.) have, but I originally thought (so that was 2009 or so when Dave dumped the disks to fdi) that the fdi that I mentioned would have source code for the standard challenger rom + something to with DDCPM, but apparently with DD BIOS is meant a Z80 program for the Challenger using CPM. I was asking to make sure, because it was not clarified whether the fdi's in the slogfdi/other directory were translated to a readable format (and so that the separate zip/tgz files contain what is in them), as they were said to be in some strange format in the other thread.

Has anyone taken a look at the CHADFS? I've tried it in various configurations in MAME and have not been able to get it recognised, doesn't initialise itself. I'm expecting a startup banner of 'Challenger ADFS', nothing in *HELP either.

I tried the Ch. 2.00 ROM and it has issues, RAM disk doesn't seem to get intialised, *CONFIG shows odd values after startup depending on state of the RAM, so it seems there is no proper startup-reset initialisation. All this is probably why I got writes to 0 instead of 4 and strangely the disk that I had in the drive was now saying the size is 253 sectors (max for RAMdisk 4 that I had formatted just before that).

ADFS hangs with a bad sum for channel 48 when both are plugged in (when selected with e.g. *ADFS or if in higher priority than the CH200, possibly after a Break, not sure, I tried just about anything in ROM combinations and startup with keys pressed etc.), the BBC hangs when doing *HELP, so from my tests both ROM images are bad.
