16 Colours RPC Emu

Post by pixelblip » Sun Sep 09, 2018 6:46 am

Hi there
My RPC Emu won't let me go up to 256 colours - it's stuck at 640x480 in 16 colours.
Can anyone suggest how to increase this please....I'm using Risc os OS 3.7
Thanks

I've never used RPCEmu but have seen this sort of issue on a real RiscPC.

Have a look at the !Configure application (double click on !Boot) to see what sort of monitor has been setup. You can choose other monitors by installing/selecting the appropriate monitor definition file.

Also, some boot sequences have a limit on the VRAM bandwidth - this can limit the modes available. I think this is set somewhere in the Boot Choices folder but can't remember the exact details and am away from my RiscPC.

As Rob says, RISC OS 3.7 and later require a mode definition file installed in your !Boot sequence to provide anything other than the minimal VGA compatible screen modes such as 640x480. The mode definition file provides RISC OS with the video timings for each screen mode resolution supported by your monitor.

However, as you're running an emulator, this is all artificial anyway as the 'monitor' is emulated. So you can bypass the requirement for a mode definition file, and its associated restrictions, by installing my "AnyMode" module in your !Boot sequence. :)
