!!! 51/4" beeb & 31/2" PC drive !!!

Post by CMcDougall » Mon Jan 09, 2006 10:58 am

Yes, it works =D> !

Get cable out of old 286pc, hopefully with 2 drive sockets on it!

Take off the 31/2" socket and the 51/4" big socket off the opposite end to motherboard socket. Undo twist, and put 31/2" socket back on. (use a small screw driver)

Open up your beeb 51/4" drive. Mine was an double Opus 4/80t switchable (Mitsabushi inside!). Take off power lead and the big 51/4" socket. Put on made cable middle big socket onto top drive ( drive 0&2). It will work with single drives aswell, as there set to drive 0/2 anyway. Put the end 31/2" socket onto your PC drive. Make up power cables, plug into beeb, and yee haa.

Now u can *backup 0 1 in 1min. Then another with *backup 0 3. Put into OmniFlop and read it back in 1min! Use Emulator to make disc back to a .ssd (thats if proggy doesn't like running on Drive2!)

wicked \:D/ CM O:)

PS if any1 needs a picture, ask and wait 2wks.

Yo bud :D

If u can get yer hands on a Toshiba Satellite pro 4600 laptop (P3), it CAN format 31/2" discs to 80t d/s DFS in 55secs! (Beeb = 2mins). Also reads them back in 55secs, with no re-seeks!! !

Probably unlikely. Are there many about at silly cheap prices (i.e. less than 50 notes). I'll just have to have patience.

Just tried the whistle emoticon, doesn't work. Does it work for you.

I use an old Compaq LTE Elite. It's a DX4-100Mhz with 24Mb of RAM and it too formats, reads and writes with similar speeds to Colins! It only cost a few quid from a junk shop!

ADI

Post by CMcDougall » Thu Mar 02, 2006 12:10 pm

Just thought i would mension also, that when copying 'bad/protected' discs, using ADI 1.21 rom, it doesnt need the 31/2" disc formatted, as it formats as it goes along!

This is because of the 'protection' actually being non formatted trax/sectors, ie MFM not FM etc

U will have to format Drive3 as usual.

The good news is, when 31/2" drive is back at 0&2, the program works!!

Bad news , OmniFlop says it will take 2hrs to read back, and prob wont work, due to all the 'e's on the bad sectors.

booting from my dual beeb drives

Post by jasonage » Mon Apr 24, 2006 4:41 pm

Hi,
I have just recently dusted off my bbc micro and starting playing with it again. I have installed a 3.5" floppy along side my 5.25" drive, and it all works fine. However, when i hit shift break it boots from the 3.5" drive. Is there an easy way of being able to choose which drive to boot from?

Cheers

No way to choose on shift-brk, always to drive0, in your case 31/2". On ADFS you can *MOUNT 1 then *EXEC !boot, on DFS *Drive 1 then *EXEC !boot, but some games/utils will jump back tp drive0 :x

If u wanted the 51/4" as drive0, then change pins on top of drive to 13 not 02 as factory setting, then swap wire, and also the twist. CM

Colin's right, you can't always specify the boot drive and have it 'stick' after a reset. You could try:
  1. Moving the drive select jumpers on both drives. The drives should be set up as first and second units so make them the second and first units, respectively. (Some mfrs. number the jumpers from 0 and others from 1, so check this first)
  2. If the 3.5" drive doesn't have drive select jumpers, set the 5.25" drive as second unit (1 or 2) and make up a custom cable (thanks Colin). Then plug in the drives so that the drive you wish to boot from is drive 0.
Edit: fixed custom cable link

This was basically a FAST way to get your reliable 51/4" discs onto not so reliable 31/2" discs, to use with the PC 31/2" drive (see other topic).

Just formatted some 31/2" DD discs and wrote some of my images to them. Now sometimes OmniFlop wont recognise the DFS 80t DS before writting, dont ask why. To get round it, put a 31/2" disc in that it does recognise, then swap disc and it writes and reads back fine!

Or, if you have one of the latest versions of Omniflop, you could just disable automatic recognition and select Acorn DFS 80T DS from the list ...
