BBC Master BIOS

Post by videofx »

I just got a BBC Master with no BIOS. What version BIOS should I get? How big is it? Can I burn It to EPROM? Where can I download it?

Anything else I need to know to get my master working?

BBC Masters don’t really have a BIOS, they’re not PCs! They have an OS in ROM. To help us to help you it would be good if you could tell us what model you have and say what appears on screen when you turn it on.

Assuming you mean the OS ROM, that seems like a strange thing to have removed. I wonder if it is worth taking a picture of the circuit board and posting here in case people can spot anything else missing.

As for the missing ROM, on the Master this is 1Mbit masked ROM but it has fewer pins than the equivalent sized EPROM. Possibilities for replacement are to ask on here is anyone wants to sell one (see viewforum.php?f=9) or to but one of the Multi-OS devices available. These generally come as a daughter board which plugs into the original ROM socket and then either use EPROM or EEROM to provide a selection of OSes you can run. You can obviously choose from 3.2 or 3.5 but some people also have 1.2 as an option for better compatibility with some BBC B games.

Best bet is probably to get a multios from retroclinic unless you have a desire to use the original without y2k fix etc? That'll do as mentioned above, letting you switch between different OS versions.
