Looking for a cheap BBC B

Hello

Yes you read the subject line lol

Does anyone have a cheap BEEB that has a popped psu etc that i can fix up and use

Im not after anything posh just (was working until psu died)

I live near evesham worcestershire

But can travel around stroud also

Hello James. A popped PSU isn't going to make a beeb any cheaper - it's a very easy fix (and mostly it doesn't stop the PSU working). If you're patient on ebay you can probably find one for under £100. You might find a dead beeb for around £40ish, which would probably be repairable with patience, but if you want something working it's going to end up costing I'm afraid - the days of the £30 beeb seem to be long behind us. You could also try amibay (there's an acorn wanted forum there), and the acorn & bbc micro enthusiasts wanted/for sale group on facebook.

Best ways to get a cheap beeb are to keep an eye on the local classifieds.

Best way to get a cheap one from eBay is buy in the school summer holidays or just after Christmas - all the prices are lower. Also look at the collection only lots because they get fewer bidders.

As Daniel says though if you want cheap then gone are the days of free or £5 machines... you're looking at a fixer-upper.

You should still be able to get a B from eBay for ~£40 but you will have to watch for a while.

4s are probably the best built and most of the bugs fixed. 7s have the bugs fixed but are of slightly more "rushed" build quality on occasion...

The number of issue 7 PCBs in Beebs that I own far outweigh all the issue 3 and 4 PCB Beebs. I detect no significant differences in reliably between the issue 4 and issue 7 boards. Further, when working on my boards and other people’s boards, I have not noticed any significant manufacturing problems.

Of course, I have only seen a very small proportion of Beebs

Model A Beebs and model B Beebs with a issue 1 or a issue 2 PCB, go for silly money on eBay.

My recommendation is, if you only want a basic model B machine with no internal expansion, an issue 3, 4 or 7 is suitable.

If you want a disk drive, or you want to use Econet, you are better off getting an issue 4 or 7 machine.

Also, note that occasionally a model B turns out to be a B+ when it arrives.

Other options are a Master 128 or an Electron.

Not mentioned in the service manual (I don't think?) is that somewhere between issues 3 and 7 there was apparently a tweak to the circuitry that synchronizes the 2 MHz clock used by the CPU with the 1 MHz clock used by some peripherals, something that's discussed here: viewtopic.php?t=18001#p250079
