Electron RGB to VGI

Post by rmbrowngr » Sun Jul 15, 2018 8:28 am

Does anyone know how to connect a 17” VGA monitor to the RGB of an Electron? Or is it better to go straight to a brand new monitor with HDMI\DVI connector and buy a Scart to HDMI box?

You can:
Use a gbs 8200 scan converter or equivalent to convert to vga.
Use a monitor that can display pal modes (eg, benq bl912).
Use hoglet's new dvi/hdmi converter with a monitor that has an hdmi/dvi input.

I've had good success with the following adaptors:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/LiNKFOR-Conver ... 490&sr=8-8

which gives HDMI output, and coupled it with one of these adaptors (or equivalent):

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Active-Adapter ... 1531659600

to get a RGB output from my beeb to display on a VGA monitor. I also have to use a cable similar to this to connect between the beeb and the HDMI adaptor:

I assume the Electron RGB connector is the same as the beeb 6 pin DIN connector.

Same for me. I have same make for two of those. My hdmi to vga is a different make but same job.

Roll on Hoglet pi RGB/hdmi for vastly less cable tangle.

The RGB DIN connector is the same on both BBC B/BBC Master and Electron machines. However, the Electrons with earlier issue PCBs don't produce such a bright picture compared to the Beebs and the later Electron machines.

The later Issue 6 Electrons buffer the RGB signals from the ULA with an extra 74LS08.

On the RGBtoHDMI board I've included a 74LS08. So the RGB signals can either go direct to the CPLD, or via the 74LS08. It turns out the switching threshold of the LS08 is about 1.1v, where as the CPLD is more like 1.65v, which was marginal with the older Issue 2/4 Electrons.

I have an issue 4 motherboard and currently using a 90’s Sony portable TV via a Scart lead. Works ok after I adjusted the vertical height, but I would prefer a bigger better display. I do still have a 29” Sony TV in storage which weighs a ton, but that doesn’t make for an easy workspace setup.
