Can be operating in 8-bit parallel mode and has RGB out with reasonable colour depth at good resolution.
I feel another project coming on :-)

Was that on hackaday, I'm sure I saw an article using a similar chip today.

Looks like the video generator is only configurable over SPI, or did I read the datasheet wrong?

The data sheets aren't the best in the world. I think you are correct, the control registers are only accessed via SPI and parallel is for RAM accesses only. The video engine runs a microcode which allows selecting different bits for display which could be interesting for page flipping etc.
