GOTEK and ADFS Issue

Post by torrind » Tue May 22, 2018 7:54 pm

Hi Folks,

I've recently dusted off some old Goteks and given them a new lease of life on my BEEB. I've flashed them to the latest version of flash floppy (v0.9.19a) and I can now successfully read .SSD and .DSD - success!

However, the problem is, I cannot read ADFS .ADL images. If I select an .ADL file, get a "Disk fault 18 at 00/00" error.

Now to confirm my setup, I have an 8 bit IDE CF card installed and I'm running ADFS 1.33 - I can successfully mount the CF card drive 0 and drive 1 and I also have a BooBip 64k sidewise eprom running dfs 2.26, NFS 3.60 and ARM 1.13. I also have the PiTubeDirect RPI 0 co-pro installed too...

If I type *DISK, I can select the Gotek .ssd's and .dsd's.

How do I select .ADL's?

For info, I have the bog standard 8271 drive interface installed.

Thanks,

Darren

Ah ha! I think ADFS needs a 1770 or equivalent floppy disc controller......
You may need to upgrade your Beeb (again!) - if so, then RetroClinic sell a suitable upgrade!

I did think the same - however!

I do have a 1770/1772 board and had that installed today! unfortunately with it installed, the Gotek refused to work at all and I had constant disk faults (mixiture of 8, 10 and 18 drive errors!!!)

But is this down to the type of disk controller I have installed then? i.e I can't use the 8271 to run ADFS and select .ADL images?

As a thought - I'll re-try inserting the 1770 and try again.....

With the 1770 controller you will need to be using DFS226 ROM for ssd / dsd disks or ADFS1.30 ROM for adx disks. Both ROMS should be unpatched.

Also, there is more to upgrading from 8271 to 1770 than just replacing the 8271 with the 1770 board:

I assume you already know this?

You need
host = acorn
in your flashfloppy config for it to recognise ADF files in the right format for ADFS - otherwise it thinks they're for the amiga.

Disk fault 18 is a DFS error. You need to be using ADFS to use ADFS images, disk errors from ADFS are things like 40, 48, 50.

Twiddling the knob on the Gotek. How do you *use* them? Select ADFS.

For ADFS you will need the 1770 interface, ADFS uses double-density formatted disks, the 8271 can only do single-density formatted disks. And if you want to use DFS with a 1770, you need a 1770 DFS (ie DFS 2.xx), not an 8271 DFS (ie DFS 0.xx, DFS 1.xx).

It works fine for me (flashfloppy firmware V0.9.19a) on my Master 128 with no extra config for ADFS .adl and DFS .ssd. (Not tried writing though). As others noted it only emulates the floppy drive, so you need the controller and filesystem installed on your micro to make it work. I have a 1772 interface in my master of course.

Thanks to danielj for the excellent video, which I followed to mod mine.

Thanks All for the comments...

After looking at my previous install of a 1770 board, I realised that I still had the 74LS393 inserted into IC86 which apparently needs to be removed and a wire jumper inserted to connect pins 1 and 4.

I didn't do this because the IC is surface mounted! Thats why I had issues!!

Can I disable the IC without removing it completely? i.e. disconnect the vcc pin???

So, given that you'll have no trouble buying a new 74LS393, I'd suggest snipping it out and making the links across the legs you've left in there? If you like, you can desolder the legs, clean up the holes, and solder in a socket?

Hi All,

Just by way of an update to close this thread - I decided to put my 1772 board in a BEEB that has a socketed IC86. I removed the IC and inserted a jumper connecting Pins 1 and 4. After selecting *ADFS and issuing a *Mount 4 command, I successfully read an .ADL file on my Gotek!!

Again, thank you all for your valuable comments and suggestions!

Hi All,

Now that I have sorted out my ADFS Gotek issue, Is it possible to access the Gotek drive from one BEEB to another via Econet?

You could run the level 1 file server software and do so? But it's not really very satisfactory...

Thanks Daniel,

Agreed its not ideal running Level 1 Econet just to do this.

Not to worry.

Thanks for the reply anyway!

Given how cheap they are, I'd just build another one. :D
