5.25" Drive Cleaning Kit

Post by Trapper » Thu Mar 08, 2018 12:16 am

Hello,

Has anyone found a vendor stocking these for a reasonable price? They seem to be extremely rare on eBay - the only kits I could find were in the United States! - and for stupid money.

I picked up my 3.5" cleaning kit for about a tenner two years back on eBay. Is this a CJE jobby?

Thanks,

Matt

Not even CJE - they hire one one. They're very rare here.

Personally I use wadded up lens tissue soaked in IPA, you have to take the lid off the drive for that. The other thing to use are chamois tipped cleaning sticks. Avoid using cotton buds as fibres can get caught in the heads and destroy them. When you are cleaning, try and avoid pushing up on the upper head, it can bend the spring and destroy the compensation (i.e. pressure from the top head) on the drive.

Bl**dy Hell! I had no idea they were so rare.

Can anyone link to an Amazon/eBay chamois kit they use for cleaning?

A google for "chamois cleaning swabs" (without the quotes) gives you a few options.

As for cleaning fluids, a bottle of IPA/iso-propyl alcohol/propan-2-ol from the local chemist was always my solvent of choice for tape heads back in the day.

I bought a 3.5" and a 5.25" kit from here:

http://www.floppydisk.com/floppy-drive-cleaner

I didn't bother with the IPA. I paid a total of $25 for both, including shipping - they didn't take too long to arrive from the US.

I just tried that and it came up with a 30 dollar shipping charge with no option to change to a cheaper one!

I sent them an email asking whether they'd ship to the UK (info@floppydisk.com). I got a response back:
If you can provide the cleaning fluid (isopropyl alcohol) the total for both with shipping $25. If you want me to provide a 2 small bottles, the total with shipping will be $32.

If you want to proceed, let me know and I will send you a payment request that you can pay on line...

Tom
I said "Yes,please!" and he sent a PayPal invoice for $25 and I paid that way - I didn't go anywhere near the web site after sending my initial message.

I... think I have a cleaning disc. Somewhere. It came bundled with our Cumana drive 35 years ago. But I've never needed to use it, and I've almost certainly never thrown it out...

I just got a reply by emailing directly and he said shipping to the UK is cheap without the alcohol so I am just waiting for a quote. Looks like ignoring the website is the way forward!

I bought a dual 3.5 + 5.25 disk cleaning kit from the states for about $30, 4 or 5y ago.
Been very useful to bring drives back to life particularly the internal + external drives on my Apple IIC portable PC.
I'd be interested in another kit (3.5 or 5.25") for when these are worn out.

I used the email adress above and asked for a price and shipping to the UK for one off 3.5 and one off 5.25 - 25USD including shipping. Thats not including the alcohol as that is a bit more bulky.
Not much point in bulk ordering as I doubt I could send them on for less than 5 dollars!

I definitely have a 5.25" head cleaning disc but I haven't seen it for years so I don't know where I put it. Perhaps I should find it and loan it out for £9.99 a fortnight.

However, I do have my own head cleaning disc which I made quite a few years ago, and which I used for the first time in ages only last week when I was testing the MDFS which was repaired at the January Manchester Bug. It seems that my master copy MDFS Master Disc decided to disintegrate in the drive, and took another disc with it afterwards, so I needed to clean the heads.

I made the cleaning disc using two 5.25" floppies. I opened up one of them and took out the fabric which is on the inside of the jacket. I cut out two squares and chucked away the rest of the first disc. I stuck one fabric square over the read/write opening on each side of the disc. To clean, I just pop a couple of drops of VHS head cleaner onto it, or a couple of sprays of camera/glasses lens cleaner on it and bung in the drive and spin the drive for a couple of seconds with a *.

If I was making another one I would use a lint-free wipe, which I didn't have back then, and when I am out of VHS head cleaner I expect I can use IPA.

Anybody would think they were trying to sell a thousand times as many of them as necessary.
