6502 second processor poll

Post by jregel » Thu Oct 12, 2017 7:38 pm

I'm curious how many of our community have a 6502 second processor of some sort.
Given the wide range of options now available, I'm wondering if the second processor can finally be consider standard equipment...

Not able to tick more than one box, so selected external 6502 as this was my first. Otherwise I would have ticked all the yes boxes! Modern remake being PiTubeDirect on RPIZero with Kjell level shifter - unless of course that's considered an emulator?

I have a matchbox copro but I'm going to add an internal pi to my master then move the matchbox to my beeb at some point.

Gosh. I feel all special for having a real Master Turbo now. (-8

(The second processor board wasn't in it from new, and wasn't new when I got it, but it has been in there for a quarter of a century.)

I’ve got an external one (box ticked) and a ReCo6502Mini (much faster and more convenient, if not quite so authentic). Haven’t set up my Raspberry Pi yet...

My first one (around 2002) was the board only from an external 6502 cheese wedge, from 8BS at a time when Chris had a few without the casing or PSU. I think that one eventually went in the Tesco Cheese Biscuits Box. Then more than one cheese wedge, a Master Turbo from Nelson IT (currently Station 200) and a couple of 65C102 co-processors, one in the BeebMaster Domesday Machine and the other currently in Station 114.

On the subject of "Master Turbo" - is there a way to glean whether any Master 128 + 65C102 is an "original" Master Turbo? There's no difference in product code on the Master 128 itself as far as I know. Did the Turbo even ever come out of the factory as such, or was it always a dealer or user upgrade?

Nothing modern yet - but I would like the one you can make out of a Raspberry Pi if someone (poking a Mod again here...) would fish out and summarise the instructions (preferably BeebMaster-proof) on how to make one contained in the 50-page thread on the subject.

(Way back in December, Kjell had already shipped over 100 converter boards for PiTubeDirect users - with some ten months of sales since then, the numbers of people with access to 6502 second processor function must be pretty high now.)

Interesting!

I'm seriously contemplating trying to do some cool retrocomputing stuff (i.e. I'm at the point where I have to spend money on evaluation boards before I can continue) but there's a limit to how much effort I can put in without making at least a bit of money from it. I get the impression, provided the thing is sufficiently awesome and reasonably priced, the market is at least in the hundreds. (And I'm hoping the design will be generic enough for other retrocomputing uses, too.)

I have a PiZero connected to the external tube socket on my master via a PiTubeDirect signal converter. I'm planning to get another couple for the second master and the BBC B, assuming the model B can be ressurrected ( currently missing a keyboard and has a broken power supply ).

This poll is flawed (Re: 6502 second processor poll)

Post by Wouter Scholten » Sat Oct 14, 2017 2:22 pm

I doubt you will get a true proportion of people having/not having a 2p. Logically people who don't have one don't want to bother doing effort for what they don't have, and those who do have one will have a desire to 'show off' what they have (don't deny it, it's true!)...

The only way to get a true poll is to force everyone to fill it in after logging in, otherwise they can't continue on the forum. But of course that would also actually not work properly as for example I would then get a feeling of "Fook you!" if someone forces me to fill in poll! :)

Possibly the "don't have one" votes should be disregarded and only look at who has one, and then look at the number of people logging in and try to determine how many don't have one. Still tricky as some may be here for Archimedes stuff, so further analysis would be needed...

It would be useful if it showed how many people viewed the poll without responding.

But I'm not sure this is a rigorous statistics-gathering exercise. (-8
