Running DosPlus (version 2.1) with Raspberry Pi 80286 processor emulator on BBC master 128.

Post by andrewn08 » Mon Oct 02, 2017 8:02 pm

(see WiFiSheep - YouTube video by Tom - Acorn BBC Master Raspberry Pi Co pro demo)

Has anyone got DosPlus booting straight from the SD drive 1 on the Retro Clinic's Data Centre with the Raspberry Pi 80286 processor emulator?
I've managed to get the Digital Research logo and then it keeps asking for command.com. (looks like it's trying to read the floppy drive)
Looks like it can't see the FAT partition on the data centre SD card and I'm wondering if this is even possible!?

(I don't have any facility to build new boot floppy disks from PC - www.cowsarenotpurple.co.uk)

If anyone has got a working disk image for data centre which I can CFRESTORE to my SD card, then please get in touch :)
Alternatively if someone can sell me a 5.25" or 3.5" dosboot disc with version 2.1 then that would also be great.
Is there anyone out there that can help?

I have a (large!) CF image that has DOS/GEM and a load of Panos and ARM co-pro stuff on it.

Cool, is it using dosplus version 2.1 to be compatible with 80286 and are you running this with raspberry pi emulator?

Pretty sure it is using 2.1 as I've had it running under the 80286 but I'll double check today.

Didn't I send someone a CF dump of a 2.1 install at some point? Was it ever uploaded?

Mine is definitely 2.1 - just checked on the 80286 on the matchbox copro.

The HD image is too big to email though (20MB zipped).

Sounds perfect! Have you got a drop box account or similar I can pull it from?

Good morning everyone. Apologies, please forgive me coming in to this but I've been having the same issue in creating media to install dos plus on my RPi board. I have a CF card on DataCentre, would it be possible to obtain a copy of an image?

Many thanks.

Im so glad i found this thread, I too have been having the same issue.

I would love to have a floppy version of the 2.1 boot disc(i am a bit old school) but if i could request a link for the CF image i would be so grateful. I have been trying all sorts of methods to no avail.

Don't believe so - this was installed on to my DC from my original M512 and Panos floppies. (Out of interest, how do you check the registration details?)

Cheers Rob - just checking. There was a version knocking about where I'd entered my details when I installed it, and we were playing with it at abug at one point, and I think it got passed around a bit. I wasn't sure whether it had made it out into the wild. Not that I'm sitting in fear of the copyright police! (I have the original disks :D). Just thought it was probably better that people weren't distributing a version plastered with my details :)

Had a quick go with the CF image (many thanks again Rob) and got GEM up and running finally =D>

Got a question (old school curiosity) is it possible to copy the dosboot from the cf card to a physical floppy and boot up the old fashioned way? (why? You may ask? Whats the point?...like i said i’m old school and i just want to see if i can   )

Also, how do you access/use the panos stuff with the pitube pandora copro option?

Many thanks for any help, its great revisting all this beeb stuff years later(had a bbc b & master since the late 80’s)

Not sure - I'll have a look at my original boot disk to see what format it's in and what's on there.
pbw72 wrote:Also, how do you access/use the panos stuff with the pitube pandora copro option?
From ADFS (with the HD mounted), do:

Code: Select all

*LIB LIBRARY
*PANOS
and Panos 1.4 should boot.

The manuals for the standard Panos software set are here: http://chrisacorns.computinghistory.org ... i/Sci.html

The hard drive image also includes various other bits of Panos/32016 software (including BCPL, REDUCE, SPICE, Modula-2).

I've downloaded danielj's Dosplus + GEM SCSI image and copied the DOSBOOT file and DOS folder (containing DRIVE_C) onto my BeebSCSI. However, I can't get the boot process to complete. I do get the Digital Research screen (complete with logo) and a message saying press Return to load DOS from HD. Ominously, at this point there is a cursor but it is not flashing. Pressing Return does nothing.

Does DRIVE_C need to be moved to the root directory or something? I should point out that I'm doing all this with an Electron so perhaps that's the problem - although I can't see why it would be.

I've got similar issues with Panos. Pandora comes up perfectly, but doing:

*Dir Panos
*Lib Library
*Panos

... does nothing. However in this case I think I can see the problem, which is that all the load and exec addresses are set to zero for some reason. I'll see if I can recreate them.

EDIT: Ah yes, of course, these files have come via Windows so there is no way to preserve the load/exec attributes. How are other people doing this?

By mounting the DFS disk images for Panos on BeebEm, I've been able to manually copy across the load and exec addresses for the "Panos" boot file, and Panos now boots! :D I guess I have to copy the attributes for the other files as well in order to be able to use it - or does Panos not really use the file attributes?

In the case of DOS, I think it is more likely that DOSBOOT does not run on the Electron. :( I can hardly imagine that it was ever intended to! It runs on B-Em and has a flashing cursor, not the steady one that I am seeing. The load address is 00000000 on B-Em as well, so that suggests this is not missing.
