Beeb black plastic surround

Post by MM5XT » Fri Jan 11, 2019 4:54 pm

Good day all.

Before contacting a small manufacturer I know and physically pulling item of the Beeb, I though I'd first ask to see of anyone is producing the black plastic keyboard surround?
Anyone know of a current source of these?

Regards

Michael

There has been a recent similar request: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=16304, but without any responses.

When fixing the ashtray I found that the surround is actually a very dark brown, not black. You can see if you put a floppy disk next to it in daylight.

Spoke with a outfit that make panels out of Polycarbonate. They would need a run of 25 to make it worth while, I'd only be wanting 3 perhaps 4 myself.

What sort of price would we be looking at? I'd be interested in 3 or 4 (possibly 5 or 6) if they looked the part. I suspect others on here would be interested too.

[Thinking about it, someone mentioned getting this done before - I remember something about them not being able to do the printing below the leds.]

I originated the question from earlier in the week.

I would also be interested in a couple; although I must admit I would like the printing for the text on the LEDs as well.

Sorry that I missed the original post by brown1d, anyhow, I've used this company before, they supply replica panels for some Heathkit equipment.
I'd guess the cost would be 20-30 USD given the small quantity, not sure how much the cutting adds to the cost, but will find out.

I need two! But depending on price would probably take at least one more for spare.

ImageHi all,

After too many years in IT I now make furniture of all things it gives me time to play with my beebs!

One advantage is having a laser cutter in the workshop - sometime ago I made a few inserts but never quite had the time to finalise them but I will do this week I just need to tweak a few of the corners. And after the manic Christmas I’ve a much quieter January

On the attached I’ve engraved the caps lock etc which could be filled with white however would be better with a stamp or screen printing.

The material is really close to the original - they wouldn’t be self adhesive but a little spray of contact would secure.

I’ll post some updated images later in the week however as it’s my equipment etc the costs would be far lower than what’s been suggested for sure.

Thanks
John

sometime ago I made a few inserts
Definitely interested in some of these...
My suggestion is to remove the perforated ashtray section and leave it plain.

Hi all

Managed to get the sizes pretty much sorted today as can be seen from the attached.

I’ve got some laser etch ink stamp material now so was going to try to make a stamp for printing the caps lock etc.

The two I’ve cut today I’ve sent up to Mark @ retroclinic and he is going to test out the fit on the various cases he has.

I’ve a few beebs but mostly issue 7 and want to check sizes are still ok on all cases.

If Marks happy with them I’ll hope to do an order for Mark and he’s more than happy to handle the elements of orders shipping etc which I really want to stay away from!

I’ll update how things go over the next few days.

John

More progress has been made including adding self adhesive backing. mark @ retro is going to do some trial fits on various BBC issues and I’ve made up a transfer stamp for the lettering Caps Lock etc.

It may take a few more weeks as normal life gets in the way but I think we are getting very close.

Latest images attached

Oh - ignore the terrible quality of the transfer lettering this was simply a test using a reverse laser cut stamp I made and some white ink obviously not suitable but a simple test to get the lettering style correct, not position or appearance The aim will be to screen print the lettering. And use ink that is suitable for adhering to polypropylene.

Getting there though!

This looks great!, would it be possible to make one of these for a System 2/3 case?

I'm in the process of building a System keyboard from an Atom case using keys from a BBC Master keyboard.

Alternative is spray painting the Atom original but I'd like to make the build as non-destructive as possible, so swapping the plastic surround to preserve it would be ideal

Keyboard LEDs are CAPS, SHLK and POWER

Hi Marcus,
Try and test with an issue 3 (old style rough case) and an issue 7 (new style smoother case) as I believe there may be slight size differences...

I've pulled the distorted surround off this Issue 3 and cleaned the glue off.
So that one is ready to carefully assess for size etc.
I think I'm correct in saying that John has designed the new surround based on the mouldings from his collection of Issue 7 cases.
Having said that I will also match up the new surround on one of my issue 7 cases, but the old surround will be staying on there most likely.

I’ve tried on an issue 4 and 7 so be good to see what difference etc. Marcus if there is much can you save the old issue 3 surround even if in bits?
