Upgrading RISC OS 3.70

Post by BeebMaster » Thu Feb 27, 2020 2:05 pm

I've decided to look into upgrading RISC OS in my RISC PC 700 (Strong Arm). Currently it has 3.70 in ROM.

All I want is the following, if possible:

1. Support for directories up to 255 files (for Econet compatibility)
2. Maybe support or just better support of larger hard discs. Currently I have a 40GB disc in there but although the files only count up to 490MB, 4GB is marked as used due to wastage.

I "think" RISC OS 4 onwards supports larger directories. What do I do to upgrade? Must I change the OS ROMs or can I download it from somewhere (pretty sure I am going to have to pay) and add it to my boot sequence. Can I even have a boot choice of OS version?

To get the larger directories you need the 4.x ROMs with the new filecore. You can have bigger drives than 500mb on RO 3.7 though.

Is this what I need then:

Or physical ROMs?

Try and get some physical RISC OS 4.39 ROMs. Or, RISC OS 5 does run on a RiscPC and there are physical ROMs of that available too.

You need the physical ones. 4.0x can softload 4.39. Don't bother with 5 on a Risc PC.

Is anyone selling RISC OS 4.02 ROMs? Or am I allowed to make my own (assuming I can) from an official download?

You don't need to upgrade to 4.x to achieve what you're after, you can backport FileCore to earlier OS. take a look this thread where I detailed how I run every OS version available for the RiscPC by using a small boot drive. I think I also posted everything you need to do it.

Great, I'll take a look at that as soon as I can. I thought it might be possible to upgrade the modules in RISC OS to do what I want, even if I didn't say so out loud.

The main requirement is to have 255 (at least) files in an ADFS directory, so I can copy from Econet server without having to run RAFS or do it within the Level 4 server. I discovered the other day that the Advanced Level 4 server won't even extend beyond 77 files, so it's less advanced than Level 2!!!!!

Yep, just crashed the file server when it got to 77, did it repeatedly. There wasn't even a dir full error, just no response at all and eventually a No reply error on the user station. It could be a curiosity with the RISC PC and Advanced Level 4 I suppose, plus I'm using the Econet module podule which has a few hacks to the Econet firmware.

I've reverted(?) to the Level 4 server which doesn't have that configuration option, but extends by creating on the local file system a directory called " " (space) when there's only one entry left.

It's on the to-do list for Arcflash to support A7000/Risc PC; right now I have a working adapter board, and have managed to run RO3.5/RO3.6/RO3.7/RO4.02 off it in my Risc PC, although I haven't gotten the bootloader working.
SW/EE from New Zealand, now in Mountain View, CA, making BBC/Electron hardware projects for fun.
Most interesting: Arcflash, FX2+PiTubeDirect Tube/Cartridge adapter, USB cart interface.
