Required Modules - A5000/OS 3.11

Post by Andrewcee » Wed Mar 14, 2018 10:26 am

Hi Folks,

Enjoying getting an A5000 up and running, learning loads. Latest success, connecting to NAS via Sunfish. Feeling chuffed, can see the Arc stuff I've downloaded using the PC on the NAS and copy across. Trouble is, in so doing I've updated modules as necessary such I've now about 2GB of ram allocated to modules alone. Add another 1.2GB for Sunfish and there ain't anything left to do anything! Anyone any ideas which moduels are 'must haves' for the machine to work and which I can kill?

Thoughts are I can boot for file transfer - e.g. copy to local hard drive (30GB IBM Deskstar formatted to 405MB, if only I could use a fraction of the hard disk as virtual ram) - and also set up alternative boot with fewer modules, perhaps only the Rom modules, for use with applications. Dunno,...???

Also thinking I could use the second A5000 I've acquired with network card to interface AUN (say) with TCP/IP, ie. use first A5000 with AUN and basic config connected to second machine which routes to NAS. Copmplecated (and expensive) or what?! Thankgoodness for you guys, experts in such things.

Andrew

I thought I was doing well having a 16Mb A540, I can only dream of 2GB.

I'm guessing if everything you've softloaded is necessary to run sunfish, then you're sort of stuck - the non-softloaded modules don't take up any ram...

I use Sunfish on my RISC PC 700 and I have it set up to load it on every boot. It has 130MB RAM so I've never noticed particularly if it is all taking up a few MB. However the only thing I have to consciously load to get it to work is !Unicode. Everything else is either already in ROM (RISC OS 3.7) or loaded as part of the standard RISC PC boot routine.

Learning...

Was starting machine using Uniboot so as to get TCP working. Have got small Uniboot working, loaded Sunfish and have remote (via TCP) printers working too on my 4GB A5000. Have 2144kB free ram. Better! Guessing original Uniboot loading loads of modules I don't need.
