Archimedes / RiscPC subscription / cover disks

Post by algenon_iii » Wed Feb 28, 2018 9:50 am

I've recently adopted a RiscPC that came with a load of stuff including 3.5" cover disks from the likes of Acorn User, Micro User etc. from around the early 90's. I don't see myself as having much use for the disks so I'm just wondering if anyone is interested in them for archiving purposes or even just to complete a collection?

Not after any money for them other than perhaps a few quid for the postage, there will probably be enough of them to fill a shoebox (if not more).

Unfortunately I don't think I'll have the time to do anything with them until around Easter time, hopefully then I'll be able to go through the disks and see what exactly is there. I'm floating the idea now on the off chance I might have a quiet weekend before then.

I'll declare an interest (I have a collection already with lots missing!), however, if anyone really 'wants' these then I'll step aside . . .

The thought occurs - do we have images of all such discs archived somewhere?

Perhaps someone would like to try the ADF imaging in ADFFS 2.64?

I think that one (or more) of the Acorn User CDs contained an archive of old cover disks. I can try to dig it out if there's interest in preserving them.

I've not got all but I do have over 100 archived as ADFs. It would be nice to know what is in this collection. [-o<

I have a bunch of ADFs from Acorn User, Micro User and Archimedes World. Probably about 100+. Happy to share if there's somewhere to host them? Also does anyone know of any Archimdes World magazines that have been scanned?!

RISC OS FR can provide free hosting, as subdomains of riscos.fr.
Just ask :)

I think I am right in saying the all Acorn User cover discs and Acorn Computing cover discs were on AU CD ROMS and also the Archimedes World ones appeared on the Arc World CD-ROM.

Right, done a first pass on the floppies sorting out the cover disks from the other ones and there seem to be disks dating from the early 1990's all the way to Nov 1999 (latest date I spotted).

I've got disks from the following magazines: Acorn Computing, Acorn User, Archimedes World and Micro User. In total I'm guessing there are between 300-400 disks

In addition to the floppies there are a couple of Acorn User and Archimedes World CD-ROMs.

First (and by far the smallest) batch of disks (I'll probably post photos of the others).

Micro User original disks
December 1991
January 1992
February 1992
March 1992
May 1992
June 1992
July 1992
September 1992

Looking at the CDs I have, the first (and only?) Archimedes World CD contains coverdiscs from February 91 to April 94. However it's not just a simple set of archives of the floppy contents - they've reorganised everything by program/article. Possibly some programs are missing (there's a cover disc index program at OLD_DISKS.APPS.DISCINDEX which lists some programs that I can't find on the CD). So if someone was to archive the CD, it looks it would take a fair bit of work to determine exactly what the differences are between the CD and the cover discs. Plus all the programs have been stored directly on the CD, so all the filenames are upper-case. Yuck!

Meanwhile, AU CD 1 has what looks like all the (32bit) Acorn Computing cover/subscription discs from '92 issue 10 to '95 issue 3 (last issue), and Acorn User cover/subscription discs from issue 93 (April '90) to 154 (April '95). These are archives so are presumably accurate reproductions of the originals.
