RISC OS File Manager

Post by Pernod » Thu Jan 19, 2017 11:53 am

Can anyone recommend a file manager, does one exist? I particularly want something that is capable of comparing files in two folders (by size/crc) and listing any differences.

I doubt you'll find a proper[1] replacement for the RISC OS filer, at least not anything native that's been maintained, although there are quite a few bits of software that enhance it. It's perhaps the most loved part!

However, applications that compare directories will exist. From the description, I think DirSync may be able to do what you want.

!Director provides a lot of enhancements, and may also be worth a look. (Personally, I didn't like it, but others were very keen.)

[1] Plenty of application launchers though!

I am assuming by "File Manager", you are looking for something like Norton Commander? If so, I do not think that such a thing was ever written. Attached are another couple of utilities that may help. One compares two directory's contents and highlights differences to both directory contents and file differences (length and time stamp). The other is a useful file locator (including contents).

Thanks all for the suggestions. I haven't tried them yet but by their descriptions I suspect I have what I need.

Is there also a simple disc sector editor available? Just something simple that reads and views sectors.

Hi Nigel,

Attached is a straightforward shareware sector editor called !DiscEdit. Usefully it also supports DOS format discs :)

I believe !Zap (the programmer's text editor) can also do this.

Thanks again, I'm sure one of those will do the job.
