The Videolympics/HBGW / 4-5 Aug 2012 / M'cr

Post by Samwise » Sun Mar 04, 2012 10:59 pm

The Videolympics
www.videolympics.co.uk

Saturday 4th - Sunday 5th August 2012

Venue:
The Lass O'Gowrie
36 Charles Street
Manchester
M1 7DB

Following on from last July's popular and well-attended In Da 80s event, and this past January's Homebrew Gaming Weekend, The Videolympics is this year's big summer event from the monthly "Computer Club" gaming evenings team, taking place on the weekend of 4th-5th August 2012 at the usual venue, the Lass O'Gowrie Pub in the heart of Manchester.

The Videolympics located downstairs in the pub will consist of a huge selection of old and new games running on consoles and computers available for public play, along with a range of gaming competitions to cash in on complement this year's Olympics festivities.

Upstairs there'll be a gathering of the best in modern homebrew coders and gamers with their latest works on display over a myriad of consoles and computers, including our crack Atom squad who are aiming to reunite and recreate last year's lets-rip-a-C64-off-the-wall experience.

The transport links into the city centre are pretty good, and if you want to stay over there's an Ibis hotel or Days hotel* nearby worth checking out. Although not widely advertised, it should be possible to book student rooms from the Days hotel during the summer for as low as £28, if you call them direct and ask.

This is the second event this year that we're hoping members of this forum will try to attend, following this year's Wakefield Show 2012 in April.

As usual, do let us all know if you're planning on attending by posting a reply to this topic.

If there is space for homebrew developers to show off their stuff then I'm interested in attending. Will the event take over the whole pub?

Hi, GroovyBee.

AIUI, Dave has agreed with Gareth that the upstairs room will be reserved for homebrew stuff, so there should be a similarly sized space to the HBGW earlier this year.

Hopefully, it will be even busier with gaming folk downstairs with The Videolympics going on too, tho (as opposed to a football match on the big screen) ...

Wouldn't be the same without you. :) I've added you to the attendee list - you can always post back here to cancel, if circumstances change. The idea behind having people on the attendee list is to encourage everyone else that there's going to be enough ppl coming to make it worth the trip!

Videolympics is a long way off, anyway, so we won't start pushing it for a few months yet, but I thought it best to mark it in the calendar so that everyone can keep the dates free in their calendars.

I have to sort out my plans for the summer, so I'm thinking of buying a ticket for this. Does anyone know if there's a way to do that without going via PayPal?

OK, I jumped through the PayPal hoops and got a ticket. I aim to drop by on one of the days to put names to faces and see what people have been up to. :)

This is going to be a great little meet for Beeb enthusiasts, hardware hackers and those interested in the homebrew scene/Retro Software.

Have to say, In Da 80s (also at the Lass, last July) was my favourite event to-date! So let's make this even better! :)

Who else is coming/thinking of coming?

Put me in as a maybe, unfortunately won't know for sure until that week, I know that's a pain when you want to know numbers but just can't be 100% at the mo.

Looks like I can only make it on Saturday. Is the door price the same price as the advance ticket price?

Yes, people are encouraged to bring their own kit!

The Acorn and Homebrew crowd will have the "Snug" to themselves again, like at last year's In Da 80s event.

I'll be bringing the monitor I promised Arcadian. Dave, do you want it brought in a box, or is it OK just as a loose item?

Dave, were we meant to receive tickets, or will we be on a list?

The pub is technically meant to open at 10am according to the lass website, but practically I suspect that may be fluid and there will probably also be some setup time. I reckon the pub will probably be open for sure by 11am and everything will be in full swing by noon.

I aim to get there for 11. Tickets are usually available on the door, so I'm planning to get one of those. I don't expect there to be a list ...

Looking forward to catching up with ppl! =D>

Daniel: Just bring your Paypal printout and you'll be fine (you'll get a drink too!) :)

Tickets available on the door too.

Sam: I agree - I'm surprised they've listed 10am as the start time, as events there don't usually get going till around 12.
