In Da 80s
Manchester's Celebration of 80s Video Gaming

16th-17th July 2011

at:

The Lass O'Gowrie
36 Charles Street
Manchester
M1 7DB

In Da 80s is a two-day retro gaming event that will be taking place on the weekend of 16-17th July 2011 at the Lass O'Gowrie Pub in the heart of Manchester, home of the monthly "Computer Club" gaming evenings.

The event is intended to be a laid back gathering for the retro gaming community, giving visitors the chance to play a selection of classic arcade machines, 8-bit home computers and consoles, whilst sampling a selection of fine ales and good food.

This event will also be hosting a Homebrew Coding Weekend - a chance for an informal discussion between independent programmers from across the UK, and the chance to meet some legendary coders from the commercial era including Andy Walker (Taskset Software) as well as Jim Bagley and Paul Hughes (both ex-Ocean).

As usual, do let us all know if you're planning on attending by posting a reply to this topic.

Remember you tinkering with the Atom you brought last time, it was kinda nice having the kit outside on the beer garden patio thing, not sure it would have been if it had chucked it down !

And I remember being worried all weekend that it was going to fall through the decking and end up in the canal!

Console Combat at the same venue in 2009 was announced as 12:00 noon - 0:00 midnight on the Saturday and 13:00 - 18:00 on the Sunday. I expect it will be similar for this event.

I seem to recall the pub was a bit late opening on the Sunday, but we came back after going for a coffee and the place was livening up ...

Sam.

@Arcadian

Hi Dave,

Can you bring the original master version of Dr who and PIAS 19 to the event as i want to examine the protection as well as play the games on an actual BBC?
Btw how far have you got in this?

Confirmation that you can find and will bring these will be great for me & others at the event.

Cheers

I'm not sure what type of Beeb will be there - it may well be a regular Model B w/ MMC (in which case Dr Who Master version wouldn't run). But I wouldn't be prepared to risk bringing the original disk to a show anyway. Plus, In Da 80s is a gaming and coding do - not a "disassemble protection schemes" event. [-X

Oh, and I don't even have PIAS 19.

...and heres me thinking it was about just having fun and meeting fellow acorn enthusiasts ( and as sad as it maybe looking at program code can be fun). :o

Btw, last time I spoke to you you mentioned the SPS and IPF. How does IPF compare to fdi?

I realise I'm going to sound like a grumpy old fart but is there anywhere to get tickets other than here, which requires registration?

Tickets, I'd forgot all about them ! Yes I'm with Dave, is there anywhere I can just buy them with paypal or whatever, having to create accounts just to buy tickets is annoying. Especially with the habit people have of re-using passwords, IMO creating accounts for none essential stuff should be avoided.

I've had a look around but can't find a contact apart from a general one for the Lass, but presume it's not them organising this event but someone renting a room. The official show website is not ready yet so no luck there.

I'll keep checking the official website to see if contact details appear.

No, it is being organised by Gareth, Mike etc at the Lass.

I'll PM you Gareth's email address now, so you can ask him about alternatives for buying tickets.

Myself and Jason Kelk are trying to drum up interest in the homebrew coding side of things. If there are to be future social coding do's like this, then we need this to be really well supported by the BBC scene (so if you're involved in Retro Software projects in any way - that means YOU!).

Scope is pretty similar to the event held at the same venue a couple of summer's ago:

Top darts, I'll drop him a line too.

Wonder if we could even pick them up at the pub itself?

Dave both me and The Kraken would like to go as well, but we would also like alternatives for buying tickets so we don't have to register.

Can you PM Gareth's e-mail address too - The Kraken doesn't have computer access at the minute
