Watford Electronics Diagnostic Disc question

Post by steve30 » Sun Apr 21, 2019 10:25 am

I was wondering if anyone could advise me about the Watford Diagnostics disk. I 'burned' the disk image onto a floppy and ran it.

I'm intrigued to try out the 'Disc system test'. If I run this, it will format a disk, verify it, write data to each track, read it, write it, read it, then the screen says 'Random access test' and the programme hangs with no activity from the drive.

Does anyone know why the programme is hanging here? It does the same on two different drives.

Also, what precisely if this disc test doing? Is it reading back data to check that the data actually got written to the disk and stayed there?

Thanks
steve30

EDIT: I just noticed the screen says "Consult manual". Does anyone have this manual?

Random access test is usually (afaik) just to check it can get the drive to "move to track x" without it hanging. I'm not sure it would attempt to read the content of a specific sector as it would have to either have a pre-patterned disk (possible I suppose if its made it with its test) or know what was there.

Is the drive set to 80 track and is the disc 80 track ?

I don't have this disc image to hand (I thought I did but I was mistaken) , if its like the other one with the games on it I think its in Basic so you might be able to see why its stopped.

Best initial 'remote guess' until others chime in for you is the drive could not do what was asked of it so the program has not hung its merely waiting for the drive to signal 'ready' or 'error' etc . I think. :)

if it is a basic program , remove the on error goto line .

if the disc is formatting and writting and reading till track 80
then it can be a program fault . maybe page is wrong ?

why not use a formatting program ?
then you see which track is bad :)

a format program normally seek, write E5 to every track on disc

I normally use the format programme from the DFS ROM. I was just curious to try this diagnostics disk to see what it did :).

Ran option D from this disk image on BeebEm 4.14 and the random access test writes from absolute sector &18F (track 39 sector 9) down to &002 (track 0 sector 2) with the values of 0 to 255 in each sector then reads them back.
I would hazard a guess that it's a DFS incompatibility?

Hmm. The image that CMcDougall posted seems to be the same one that I have already. The one from billcarr2005 does seem different though. That actually did something when running the 'random access test'. It looked like it wrote a bit of data then failed with Sector not found.
