Music 500/5000 software/music

Post by Pernod » Tue Oct 02, 2018 9:30 pm

I'm trying to collate all known software/music for the Music 500/5000. There's plenty scattered around the internet and attached all over this forum, but no single archive that's being maintained, making it difficult to find anything.

Here's what I know exists, those in green I've considered archived, and red are missing or currently bad dumps. I've found a few other albums and different versions of the Issue discs but am still going through them to ensure they're not duplicates.

I guess there's multiple releases of some of the Issue discs so if anyone has originals I'd like to add them to the collection. Can someone also post a photo of some Issue and System discs with readable labels so I can try to name them appropriately.

If anyone has anything else not listed here I'd appreciate it being posted, thanks.

I have Studio 5000, Studio -2, and Studio 5000-4 Issue Discs, not sure which releases they are. I'll upload photos when I get a chance. It'd be great to have links to all those disks already archived! [-o<

Thanks. Rather than repost everything I'll add links to where things are in the above post, majority are hidden in the forum.

I'm on my phone at the moment but I have references to software that is known MIA.

One of my side projects was planned to be to collate and make all the software available from the retro kit site at some point in the future this thread may just kick me into gear...

I was aware but the downloads no longer work. I grabbed them a couple of years ago and the majority of files were just renamed -004, think there were only three unique images.

Appreciate having someone more familiar with the software on-board, and would be great to get a nice clean collection hosted at the retro kit site.

Quite a few System disc images are double sided (dsd) and I guess they should be single, so some investigation and cleanup required.

Even some of the images in your Soundstage archive are bad, SSCAPE.SSD is wrong and is a duplicate of SSPACE.SSD. SSPACE and SSPACEI are identical too.

Thanks for all the hard work Nigel, that is an impressive list of links!

I’m quite sure I have disks that are labeled Amplinex 20 and 22, so I’ll have a look at those when I get the chance (somewhere this month).

Quite a few links are your posts, so I guess you have a stash of original media? Could you post photos of anything original and Hybrid related, making sure labels are readable.

Ah, that's a shame, I've gone through my archives and it seems that when I archived the site, the ssd's were stored on another domain and my site ripper didn't follow the links so my amplinex archive has the same dodgy issue 20 and missing issue 22.

Yes, there were multiple discs with different labels but they were essentially the same. The names represent the labels that were on the discs. I'm pretty sure I've got some other discs archived now which are better than those. It's time I am lacking most of the time...

As an aside, in a conversation I recently had with Chris Jordan about the Universal product, there was a hardware tweak to the 5000 which took the line output and routed it to the spare pins on the same plug which were then connected internally in the 5000 to the 1MHz audio-in pin so the Hybrid Music 5000 audio output was shunted through the BBC Micro's internal speaker.

I've also finally got a fully working Hybrid System disc that supports the Hybrid 3000 and extended MIXER on this thread.

Thanks for all the additional info, MIA's, and media scans, very helpful.

I've been looking at Music 87, the image posted elsewhere is single sided but there's a *drive 2 in there when you choose AMPLE from the menu. So any chance of it being re-imaged as dsd? What's in the box, any instructions? The disc appears to be a Master version as it automatically loads the ROMs.

Regrettably I no longer have the original disk or the box. Had a look at the copy I have and it has games on side 2, nothing ample related. So the Ample option on the menu gives a "not found" error :(

Using the two Amplinex discs that Paul posted a few days ago, I've got myself in gear and published a full archive of the Amplinex discs including those so it should be full and complete and downloadable as a couple of zip files or as individual discs.

https://www.retro-kit.co.uk/page.cfm/content/Amplinex/

I'm planning on getting a few screenshots of bits and pieces from the discs and putting more information about each one on the page. If it grows much I may just end up with a page for every disc :shock: Right now, they're at least all available and some are documented as having Music 3000 compatible arrangements on them although I've found more than I've listed at the moment.

Glad this little exercise has proved useful.

What's the story behind the Anex collections? From the few I've looked at they seem to be a redistribution of Amplinex.

Also, any info on Amplenet International?

It would be good to implement the M3000 in B-Em. I gather it is a second M5000 but at a different address. Anyone know what address?

Thinking of authoritative versions of things I note there is more than one AMPLE ROM in circulation, not just a different serial number but other changes despite claiming to be the same version. I think the two have have each been patched to disable the copy protection but done in different ways. There is an article on the copy protection at http://www.8bs.com/submit/subamplepatch.htm but neither of the ROMs I have seem to have been patched exactly as described there either.

I have ROMS with these md5sums:

0560541feceb9eda68f2b7e1f4d855e8 - this was posted to a thread on here in a RAR file.
ce0601b493ba7f0544816cf29b9eb24c - this is bundled with B-Em and I think originates from Colin Fraser's site.

0560541feceb9eda68f2b7e1f4d855e8 appears to have the checksumming code still in place but also seems content to load modules from the disc that contains the ce0601b493ba7f0544816cf29b9eb24c ROM so it seems the logic around what to do if the checksum doesn't match must have been nobbled.

ce0601b493ba7f0544816cf29b9eb24c appears to have been patched to not bother with the checksum and possibly use a fixed value depending on what the checksum was supposed to have been of. The article on 8BS explains that checksums are calculated for programs being saved so this may have a bearing on the problems described in viewtopic.php?f=4&p=216973#p216598

From an archiving perspective it would be good to know a virgin copy exists somewhere. It would also be good to have it so I can at least see what has been patched.

That would be good. It looks like there may have been a change in the AMPLE module format somewhere along the way. For the two versions of the ROM I have the first two bytes of a module are its length as a little-endian number. The following C program uses this to calculate the checksum using the same algorithm as the AMPLE ROM:

Code: Select all

#include <errno.h>
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <string.h>

static void msum(const char *fn, const unsigned char *data, long size)
{
    if (size > 2) {
        long size2 = data[0] | (data[1] << 8);
        unsigned sum = 0;
        if (size2 > size)
            size2 = size;
        if (size2 & 1)
            sum += (data[--size2] + 1) << 8;
        while (size2 > 0) {
            sum += data[--size2];
            sum += data[--size2] << 8;
        }
        printf("%04X %s\n", sum & 0xffff, fn);
    }
    else
        fprintf(stderr, "msum: %s too small\n", fn);
}

int main(int argc, char **argv)
{
    int status = 0;

    while (--argc) {
        const char *fn = *++argv;
        FILE *fp = fopen(fn, "r");
        if (fp) {
            fseek(fp, 0, SEEK_END);
            long size = ftell(fp);
            unsigned char *data = malloc(size);
            if (data) {
                fseek(fp, 0, SEEK_SET);
                if (fread(data, size, 1, fp) == 1) {
                    fclose(fp);
                    msum(fn, data, size);
                }
                else {
                    fprintf(stderr, "msum: unable to read %s: %s\n", fn, strerror(errno));
                    fclose(fp);
                    status++;
                }
                free(data);
            }
            else {
                fprintf(stderr, "msum: %ld bytes not available\n", size);
                fclose(fp);
                status++;
            }
        }
        else {
            fprintf(stderr, "msum: unable to open %s for reading: %s\n", fn, strerror(errno));
            status++;
        }
    }
    return status;
}
Running that on the modules on the B-Em Music 5000 system disc I get:

Code: Select all

CE14 M.ATOS
CE14 M.EW
CE14 M.FX1A
CE14 M.INS1
CE14 M.INT
CE14 M.KFX
CE14 M.M2
CE14 M.M4
CE14 M.M5
CE14 M.MENU
CE14 M.MIX
CE14 M.PAD
CE14 M.REC
CE14 M.STAFF
i.e. all these modules have a consistent checksum that should match ROM ID CE14. If I run the same program on the modules on your StudioSystem1986 disc I get:

Code: Select all

5476 M.ATOS
1C65 M.EW
085F M.FX1A
2270 M.INS1
F7EE M.INT
E4AC M.M5
6083 M.MENU
A43D M.MIX
CFCA M.PAD
B4CD M.STAFF
which is obviously not right. Also some modules claim to be implausibly short, e.g. the first two bytes of M.INT say the module is A9 bytes long whereas the size on disc is 1055.

It would be worth checking the M3000 enabled disc I posted last week as I used the B-em system disc and am image of my update disc to create the M3000 enabled disc to see exactly what the update disc changed.

Thanks, Paul. B-Em now has Music 3000 support in this branch in Github: https://github.com/stardot/b-em/tree/sf/music3000

That's great. I've been trying to get B-em to build in my Visual Studio environment (2017 and 2010) but I lost the will to live as getting allegro to co-operate with my environment appeared to be downright impossible.

Once I'd sorted out all the nuget issues and include paths, the build still failed with 3300+ syntax errors which were all rooted in the way some things were declared in alplat.h but it all looked sensible in there.

If someone wants to point me in the right direction getting B-em to build then I can test and contribute. It's that or someone builds me an exe for me to test with for the Music 3000.

... From an archiving perspective it would be good to know a virgin copy exists somewhere. It would also be good to have it so I can at least see what has been patched.
Attached is an original one. I have another rom with a different serial number, but have not yet made an image of that one.

Paul,

As I am not a Windows developer I don't propose to fight Visual Studio and Allegro either. It would be good if a Visual Studio expert would dive in so people have the option to develop B-Em on Visual Studio but in the meantime I have built it for Windows with MingW and the result is at: https://github.com/stardot/b-em/releases/tag/m3000

So the Ample option on the menu gives a "not found" error :(
I remembered who I sold (or rather exchanged with) the M87 to and contacted him. He still has the software and is a member on this forum but is currently not very active. I am confident that I'll be able to copy and image the disk at some point in the future.

Thanks, I can now see what has been done to the other two.
