Help with the Educational Archive

Post by flaxcottage » Wed Apr 11, 2018 3:59 pm

For many years I have been collecting as much as I can of the vast number of educational software titles for the BBC micro and preserving them digitally.

There are over 1000 titles in my archive to date and I have quite a few still left to archive.

Whilst trying to crack the protection on some of the titles I have, I received help from some of the amazingly skilled forum members. =D> =D> I also became aware that between us we probably have a lot of titles which are still MIA from my archive.

I have attached a csv file of the current state of my archive, excluding titles produced by amateur programmers, teachers and titles which could not be attributed to a particular publisher or author.

So now to the request. If anyone has any titles which are missing from the archive and would be willing to send me digital copies of the same (including documentation if possible) I should be very grateful to hear from you. [-o<

Titles produced by 4Mation and Cambridge Software House must excepted from this archive request since both these companies actively enforce the copyright to their titles and do not wish to participate in the preservation of their BBC micro software in this way.

Here's my Brilliant Computing stash including some manuals: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/42w1ynzjpfdi ... G8wja?dl=0 --- would love to find Break Time Games one day.

J.N. Tabberer's Micro Mike: https://www.dropbox.com/s/u6b2xfnzjusfq ... E.SSD?dl=0 (I think there might be another title or two from J.N. Tabberer).

Thurrock Care Switch Programmes (2000, with a tweak to make the lottery system up to date):
https://www.dropbox.com/s/hcmrvsbfzaa6d ... 7.ssd?dl=0

[SEMERC Blue-File Database]:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/cq2zcgmnaei8 ... xc50a?dl=0 - including ROM that's needed to view, what I believe is a copy of "The Blue File". I might be wrong though. You'll find a huge repository of educational stuff on that list. Lots of interesting stuff, including switch accessible Turtle control.

Huge thanks to you and all that helped and continue to help with preserving this stuff (Stephen Barriball, Jeff Hughes, Colin McDougall and many others).

I have a copy of "The Cheshire Cat Maths O Level Revision Part 1", two cassettes and Manual in original packaging.
I have never tried to read the tapes and have no plans to.
If you want this, I will post it to you.

Although I do not have anything to 'share or add' as such, I must applaud the efforts in preserving what we can, when we can before things are lost forever. =D>

Other platforms also have similar "Missing in action" type scenario's too I see, its only right that we save what we can.

I did send a couple of years ago what I managed to erm 'collect' to add to the collection however most of the titles were already present.

The tapes arrived yesterday, thanks. =D>

All the contents have been copied over to my HDD on my Master. Once the different components have been linked into a menu I'll post the SSD.

Ha ha! Nothing is ever simple. :?

The code only works properly on a BBC B or B+. The programmer for these titles used a 'feature' of the BBC B regarding user-defined characters. If character 224 is defined, this is also mirrored every 32 characters downwards to 128. The programmer used defchar-96 to get the ASCII code to print and copied this directly into the program code. This is going to be a nightmare to get working on all 8-bit machines. #-o

Hi,

I have just joined the forum. At the weekend I finally went through and made a list of the hoard of BBC software that had been clogging up part of my parents' house for the last 20+ years. My father worked for Surrey County Council and accumulated a bunch of educational titles from there - many items are stamped as having come from the Camberley Teachers Centre.

A bit of poking around the forum yesterday suggests that some of these might be missing from present collections.

Here is the full list of what I have. I have highlighted things that seem to be missing from the list posted at the start of this thread at least, but some of the rest may be of interest too as I have the boxes & manuals as well as just disks/images. I don't know if anyone is making efforts to preserve that stuff too.

Space Mission Mada box/disks/manual
Merlin's Castle manual
Plane Designer box/disks/manual
Ollie Octopus' Sketchpad BBC B box/disk/manual
Instat BBC box/disks/ROM
Instat Teaching Guide (book, Statistical Services Centre, University of Reading, 1987)
Hex BBC B sleeve/disk
"Our Facts" disk
"Captain Darren" disk
"Psychebot" disk
Paintbox BBC manual/disk
Understanding Waves, Mechanics and Vibrations BBC B manuals/disks
Pazazz BBC B box/manual/disk
Podd BBC B box/disk
Workshop Electron box/manual/tape
Adventure Playground box/manual/disks
Dragon World BBC B box/manual/disk/tape
Box Of Treasures box/manuals/disks/tape
Mr T in the Mystery Maze BBC B box/manual/tape
Zillion BBC box/manual/disks
Jigsaw & Sliding Block BBC box/manual/disk
Key: A Data Handling Package + ITV Placenames BBC box/manual/disk
MicroSmile box/manual/disks
MicroSmile 2: The Next 17 BBC/Master box/manual/disks
MicroSmile 3: 11 More BBC box/manual/disks
Tele-Book box/manual/disks
The 'L' Game BBC box/disk/manual
"Anita Straker Maths 4-9" disk
"Anita Straker Maths 9-13" disk

"OSMOID Shapes" 2 disks
"OSMOID Number Bounds & Place Value" disk
"OSMOID Measurement" disk
"OSMOID Four Rules & Fractions" disk
"OSMOID Multiplication" disk
"OSMOID Angles" disk

Maths Topics 1 BBC B box/manual (Netherhall Software)
Maths Topics 2 BBC B box/manual/disk
Maths Topics 3 BBC B box/manual/disk

Tesselations BBC B box/manual/disk (Homerton College Cambridge)
Probability and Statistics Programs for the BBC Micro box/manual/disks (Dr David Green / Capital Media)
Supergraph BBC box/manual/disk (David Tall / Glentop)
Basic Music Composition - The Tobin Music System BBC B manual/disk (Helicon Press)
Adventures 1 - The Lost Frog / Merlin's Castle / Make An Adventure manual (Anita Straker)
Logo BBC B box/manual

I have neither the time nor the hardware to try to archive this at the moment, so I am looking to pass it on to someone.

I don't know how much will be readable, but this stuff has been in a dark dry cupboard for 20+ years and there is no sign of damage or mould on the disks.

Yes, this particular copy does say "The 'L' Game" on the cover but that's what it is.

Ah. I'd quite like to see your variant of the cover if you can upload a scan or a photo of it..?

All packed up in a box at my parents' house just now. But it wasn't that interesting - just a plain black on white typeset title sheet, on the front of a hardback sleeve containing the disk/manual. Possibly something done locally rather than officially by the publisher.

There's an IBM PC version in the hoard as well, with a different cover but the same sort of sepia toned artwork on the cover of the manual.
