Wapping Editor printer driver

Post by Yrrah2 » Thu Aug 08, 2019 4:48 pm

Hi,

Today I was playing with Wapping Editor.
All seems fine, and works great. But the printerdriver delivered with the Editor doesn't work well with my Epson LQ300.
The printing itself works but it is low resolution only. So when I want to print a high resolution images by creating a big page, the result stays in Low resolution and half of the page is printed.
So what I do now is create a page in Wapping Editor and import this into AMX and print it in high res. (so my A4 on screen becomes A5 size on the printer)

Does anyone know if there are more drivers for Wapping Editor, or if it is possible to create/edit the driver?

Cheers

Koen

There's also the Wapping Support ROM which I believe provides Epson drivers. If you can't find it then I'll attach later.

It must be on the forum somewhere but not easy to find, so here it is.

Great Thanks!!! =D> =D>
Now have to find the right * command to get into the rom.
Or does it only work from within Wapping Editor itself?

Correct, you should see additional options within Wapping Editor. Never used it so can't suggest anymore.

Thanks again.
Didn't know it was called 'Wapping Support' so I searched and found also a disk image with supported software and the Version 1.3 (together with a 1.2 version) rom image.
.
Wapping Editor Utilities.zip
Wapping Editor Utilities
(67.88 KiB) Downloaded 3 times
.
And indeed Wapping Editor sees the Supported rom image (was a bit of looking and testing before I figured out what the additions where).

Also saw that IanB has written most of the Wapping Editor.
So I hope he does read this [-o< have a little question on V1.3
Version 1.3 says that ther should be a little menu appear where you can select different printing modes (draft, normal, High etc.)
But I don't see the menu appear when I click the print button. (as the readme file explained)

If there are any hints on this, would be lovely.

Cheers.

This is what's displayed on Wapping Editor 1.30 with Scanner Driver 1.31 (which is the 1.30 support ROM with additional drivers for the Watford hand scanner):

we_print.jpg

The menu is only displayed if you have a page loaded, clicking on Print with no page loaded doesn't show the menu.

Hmmm, I'm getting the impression that Wapping Editor doesn't see the supporting rom after all.
After some extra testing and trying I found out that none of the extra functions mentioned in the 'readme' file are working.
So no extra menu when printing, and no extra functions in font editor or typesetter part.
So I think I'm doing something wrong, or the Wapping Editor is faulty.

Earlier I mentioned that the Editor found the extra features , but I think it's more that the printer driver on version 1.21 has some extra text before it starts printing. And fooled me in that way.

I took a closer look at the rom and saw that one pin is missing. Is that correct?

Or could it be that fitting the Editor rom in the slot this way is not thr right way?

Or should the support rom been blown on an eprom instead of loading it in SWR socket 4?

Any hints on this?

Cheers

A message is displayed in the bottom right indicating the support rom is detected.
This is what I get with the extension ROM srloaded into slot 4:

It's not missing on mine but that pin is the A14 address line on the 27512 which is under the control of the PAL and not coming from the BBC socket so it shouldn't make any difference if the pin is there or not.

Are you running the latest version of the main ROM as well as the support ROM (i.e. 1.30 for both)?

I can't find what version I'm running from Wapping Editor.
This is what I get when I've started up.
IMG_1724.JPG

And this is while Loading a page. But after loading I get the same screen as above.
IMG_1725.JPG

And this is what *ROMS tells me
IMG_1726.JPG
Do I need to run the Editor 1.3 version to use the 1.3 Support Rom?

Yes, you need to update your EPROM to 1.30

Here's a copy of the ROM:
Wapping Editor 64K 1.30.zip
(42.12 KiB) Downloaded 2 times

Wow, super early version. Only 1.30 is currently archived.

Hope you can arrange to have yours dumped and updated to 1.30.

Is it easy to dump a rom like that?
Or is the same Eprom programmer needed?

Definitely needed. The 64K ROM cannot be saved from the machine like other 8K/16K ROMs as it is banked by the carrier board.

Where are these roms archived?
Or shall I put these on my site? (planning to give it an update one of these days)

Is the 64k ROM so fully packed that the extra features from the support rom image don't fit within the 64k?
There is also a V1.21 support rom. Does that mean you need V1.21 as ROM or does the V1.21 support rom also works with V1.2 ROM?

I'm not sure if I ever archived all old versions of the code, I just found v1.10 and v0.85 but haven't looked in detail yet.

Yes, there is another 8-16K in the support ROM depending on version although it is mostly a duplicate of the disc based utilities like the preview code (PREVMC) or the printer drivers. You can use it without the support ROM as long as the disc utils are present in the current folder.

Generally the versions should match and they were always shipped as a pair but a minor digit change like your above example is just a bugfix so you can use 1.2x with 1.2y or 1.3x with 1.3y etc.

Mark was helping me out with a copy of QuestPaint and was willing to help me to make a Wapping Editor V1.30 ROM. :D
And he helps me creating a backup of my V1.01 version.

Attach it here so it's in the same thread as the later version, or start a new topic in archive submissions.
