Hi,
Just a quick post on my DIY efforts this morning.
When I got hold of my 'new' A310 a couple of months back, it had a number of faults, but the most obvious was that it didn't switch on. Instead, the PSU just made a buzzing noise (suggesting a short circuit). A little investigation tracked this down to the 12v line and as there was nothing connected which required 12v, I unplugged the 12v connector on the mb, and it has been running with the 12v line disconnected since then.
Looking on this (and other) forums, people have suggested the cause is likely to be tantalum capacitor C37 (100uF, 16v). This is reported to break down after a long time of storage to open circuit and give the same symptoms I saw. As C37 is a filter and not essential to normal running, the suggested solution is to snap C37 off the mb, and see if the computer runs. So without too much to loose, I did this and snapped the capacitor off the mb, by twisting it back/forwards a few times.
I confirmed the removed capacitor was open circuit with a multimeter, then plugged the 12v line back to the mb, and switched on - success! The A310 started up fine. So I placed an order for some replacement tantalum capacitors of the same value, and today I went about the replacement...
Pictures are worth 1000 words, so here is the replacement in pictures:
Now I have one happy A310. Job well done.
