Baildon Electronics ICS ideA A3000 board & CD Drives?

Post by Joka80 » Sat Feb 02, 2019 12:17 am

Hello all!

I hope your all well and I have been reading quite a few threads relating to the Baildon Interface for the A3000. I just want to discuss a couple of things as I feel getting the thread started on expanding the interface would be good... :D

I have a Baildon Electronics ICS ideA A3000 mini podule currently in my A3000 and I think it's great! I remember it was around 1993 when I bought mine new whilst I was having computer lessons after school and my teacher persuaded my dad to buy one for my A3000 so it got sent off to have the upgrade fitted. About a week later it came back with the upgrade and a 340MB Connor hard drive which still works to this day!

Modernising it somewhat to use compact flash was quite easy, in-fact the interface seems to be so flexible with the card adapter and manufacturer of compact flash card. Even the ICS software recognises a range of cards and formats them with no problems. An A3000 with flash storage!

Now for my questions...

Presumably the port on the back, I could connect a CD-ROM drive and this acts as the 'slave' and the hard disk/flash card internally acts as the 'master' as when I tried a twin compact flash adapter on the internal interface it didn't like it. With a twin adapter it took ages to boot and kept saying hard drive failure or bad drive. But when I put a single compact flash interface, it works no problem...

I want to add an IDE CD/DVD drive at the back port, would that involve a simple firmware update or changing over the ROM underneath? In all honesty I haven’t even tried it to see if it works ok it’s current configuration as I don’t have a drive but if it did I would get one from eBay...IDE hard/optical drives nowadays command a high price but worth the coolness factor if it worked...

On the topside of the board it says:
A3000 IDE INTERFACE V5
(C) 1992
BAILDON ELECTRONICS

On the underside of the card on the ROM chip it says:
(C) 1993 ICS LTD
IDE3V5 3V06

Look forward to discussing this!

A CD drive should work fine as slave, if your version of IDEFS includes CDFS driver software. And if not, it should just be a case of updating your IDEFS ROM with a later version of the ICS IDE software..they went up to 3V22 I think, which definitely included CDFS, and there is now the alternative ZIDEFS which is compatible with the interface, although I'm not sure it includes CDFS?

ZIDEFS is not compatible with any 8-bit ICS cards.

ZIDEFS does not support CDFS (afaik)

Ah ok, only the 16bit ICS cards then...!

Was 3V22 the last version released for this interface?

Sorry for the delay . . .

The only ROMs I have seem to be (as written on the ROM label):

ARCIN.3 version: 1V5/3V13 (ICS 1995)
ARCIN.3 1V5a/3V15 (ICS 1995)
A3IN IDEFS 3V15 CDFS 2.V21/0.14 (BE 1996)

I may have other versions on Disc, however, that may take a while to sort out, as most of them have mould on their surfaces.

No worries Dave!

I’m sorry for the subsequent late reply...was it possible to upgrade an earlier version ROM to say, for instance, the latest version produced? Presumably using !Snafu ?

IIRC the V5 IDE board did have a firmware update but it came with a revised PCB e.g. V5a. The only difference was pin 1 was given an address line instead of being tied to +5V. I did a conversion for someone, a few years ago. You just have to remove the ROM, isolate pin 1 then add a link. The details are on the forum somewhere.
