Which Raspberry Pi to purchase?

Post by Square Mezzmer » Fri Aug 10, 2018 11:50 pm

I've been struggling with Acorn RISC PCs for a bit now (leaking battery, crashing hard drive) and think my excursion to RISC OS would be a lot simpler if I purchased a Raspberry Pi to install it on - with a comfortable installation I can finally start my project!

I'd puchase https://thepihut.com/products/raspberry ... del-b-plus though looking at the RISC OS Open site there were early internet connection issues with the Pi 3B+?

Is there a definitive model to get? Should I just go ahead?

Any other tips or essential advice is much appreciated!

Thanks.

"were", past tense.

The 3B+ uses a new LAN chip, and we didn't have a driver for it until a few weeks after the 3B+ was released. Now that we have the driver, it should work just as reliably as any other Pi model.

As you're developing commercial software, I'd advice going with the latest Pi model as the CPU has more deprecations than most cores. ie If it runs on a Pi3, the code will at least be compatible with all other CPU's.

@Phlamethrower Ah, that's all good to hear.

@sirbod Thanks for the recommendation, I'll go ahead and purchase the Pi 3B+

Unless things have changed radically, RISC OS will only use one out of the 3B+'s cores.
