A3000 - IDE podule

Post by sixxdog_uk » Sat Apr 23, 2016 3:53 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking for an IDE podule for my A3000.

I'd prefer internal but could live with external :-)

Don't want to pay LOL prices.

Anyone able to help out?

Many thanks in advance.

Alex :-)

IDE Podules are like rocking horse excrement,

I believe Dave H has one on his 'to do' list but as this list is quite long I'm not sure of the wait you'll have!

There's a simtec on fleabay atm, with best offer available. Judging by CJE's inventory and the complete lack of them on eBay, I'm starting to think the lol prices aren't quite so lol at the moment. Getting one for under £80 would be doing well.

I missed the 2 that were available on the charity stall at the Wakefield show... but I did snag the StrongARM RISC PC so not all bad news...
There's some great kit out there for the Beeb, I would love it if someone could "knock together" some IDE and Ethernet (combined?) Podules, I know it's not that simple (hardware design, testing, manufacture, drivers, compatibility...) but I'm sure there's a market (even if it's small).

I have the following titles:

Acorn A300/A400 IDE Interface (External) (c) Hard- & Softwarevertrieb 1990 (drawing dated 7-2-91) <- I think this was a collaboration with a German chap called Peter Szymanski (I have his address in Meinerzhagen), however, I'm not sure of the reasons we didn't go with his design.

Internal A3000 IDE Interface 4 (drawing dated 25-11-91)

Acorn A300/A400/A500 IDE Interface (drawing dated 10-2-92)

Internal A3000 IDE Interface (drawing dated 7-4-92)

So, probably not. I'll contact Dave Prosser - I need to persuade him to recover all his old documentation [-o< I'll do an e-mail today, while I'm thinking about it.

All the drawings are A3. I'll need to visit a local copy-shop to have them PDFed.

The A300/400/500 style boards will be 16-bit...

I found an IDE interface in an A310 that is labelled "SF & PS IDE". The copyright mentions Peter Szymanski. It seems similar to the ICS interface, but not quite the same.

Yes, Peter had a partner - I came across his name yesterday, whilst looking for something else - If I find it again I'll add it here. That must have been a very early unit . The one ICS sold was an upgraded version of that one.

That looks identical (ignoring the extra wires and caps) to the ICS interface that works with ZIDEFS - http://www.zeridajh.org/software/zidefs/snapshots.htm

I didn't have a copy of the ROM, I'll give that a try in my IDE interface, it should be compatible.

Yes, it looks identical, even including the "SF & PS" marking.

I'd like to try ZIDEFS! But the original ROM was only 8K, ZIDFS needs a 64K eprom? Does that work without modification?

The firmware on the card now is not very practical. E.g. it has a configuration option "IDEDiscs" that can't be set on RO3.11 because RO3.11 has the same name for the inbuilt configuration option. And the drive name does not show in Risc OS. It is always "IDE 4".

ZIDEFS only requires 8K, the instructions refer to using a 2764.

Actually, I assumed the download (zidefs_110.bin, 51K) was the ROM image. Looking again I realised that it is an archive file. Using an archiver I found the ROM image and it works like a charm in my interface! =D>

I think "SF" refers to Stefan Fröhling who sold the first IDE podule I am aware of. There were podule and mini-podule variants. I think he even exhibited at various shows in the UK including Acorn World. There was one little snag in this design that meant that it was incompatible with Seagate drives, but apart from that, it had a good reputation for being quite reliable in Germany. But we all had SCSI podules of course :D

Have fun

Thanks for the ROM image, it allows me to use my 16-bit IDE card on RISC OS 2 (ZIDEFS doesn't work on RISC OS 2). It doesn't work on Arthur 1.20, but that might be expecting a bit much.
