..so it would have to be made into a self-extracting archive. How do I do that?

Almost...HForm failed: Disc error 23 at :4/0F598000 at line 3210

Were my options incorrect?

Mainly looks ok, No need to Format, Initialise should be enough. I probably wouldn't use Verify (not until I was happy the card would work)
I haven't had much luck with Transend devices, and Acorn IDE interfaces are very picky about the cards they work with.
Have you got any other CF cards you can try?

"S4GB" not sure I understand.
If you have a card that fits, give it a try. Just make sure you pick values (e.g. cylinders) that gets you below 512MB partition.

Did you mean 4GB? It's worth a shot. My preferred CF for RISC OS 3.1 machines and ADFS is a 512MB Transcend. 512MB "blue" SanDIsc cards also work fine but have proven slower in use (surprisingly!).
I use 4GB "CloudDisc" cards on machines that I can run Wizzo on (A4, A30x0) - complete reliability in my experience.

I meant 4GB.

I tried and received the message that it was greater than 512MB and wouldn't work.

There are quite a few default settings when performing the format:

Sectors per track: 63
Heads: 16
Cylinders: 1006
Drive parameter init flag: 1
Drive lba flag: 1
Parking cylinder: 1005

No more changes to defect list

Large file allocation unit: 1024

Could some of these settings be incorrect for the card?

Here's HForm 2.19 I just found on my A4000, this is a Sparkplug archive so it should open on the A5000 but may need the file type setting to &DDC.
Self extracting version.

Should I give this a try and if so, do I copy the entire file onto a floppy disk and launch from the A5000?

I don't think it will help, it's an older version. It's like the 2.48 version, extract it to floppy, set type to basic on Arc, run it.

edit: Updated to version 2.48 of hform
edit2: remove RISC OS 3.6 check from !Run file
Well well -- this is great. I'd always been meaning to look in to why HForm 2.19 craps itself when presented with large drives, but never got to it. This HForm 2.48 does run on RISC OS 3.1 and does cope with finding huge disks connected. I've been able to successfully format and use an old 60GB SATA SSD (!) with a £3 eBay-source IDE to SATA adaptor in an A4000. Fantastic. Ridiculous, but fantastic. \:D/ Thanks again IanS.

It worked!

I bought a 512MB SanDisk CF, followed the same process and it worked straight away!

That sounds like you need to patch ADFS

You folk might want to keep an eye on my Partition Manager threads on ROOL and JASPP as it will replace HForm.

It's in early development, although I aim to start implementing full disc FileCore formatting soon.
