MDF for Samsung SyncMaster S24B150 LED monitor

Post by Daveo » Mon May 11, 2020 6:31 pm

Hi.

I need a monitor definition file for my Samsung SyncMaster S24B150 LED monitor (see here for specs).

Currently have it configured using the following:

Monitor: Vision Master Pro 450
Res: 1024x768
Colours: 256

Ideally, I would like 1600x900 or 1280x720.

I currently have 1MB VRAM, but have purchased a 2MB VRAM chip, which I'm awaiting delivery of.

I have a similar spec monitor its a Hanns rather than Samsung. I run it at 1920 x1080.

You're welcome to try the attached - at your own risk of course !

It would certainly be a good starting point, if you have makemodes or similar to tweak it further. It may just be ok.

It has your preferred defs in also. Although when I tried those on my screen they didn't fill the screen area.

Remove the .txt extension to use (couldn't upload without an extension).

Many thanks. Will try that.

With makemodes, where would that be if it's installed (Risc PC 700 running Risc OS 4.39)?

Tried file but it made monitor go funny and had to reboot with num pad * so that I could switch monitor back to previous setting.

Think it maybe timings or something, but don't have makemodes to do this myself.

One thing to note while testing monitor settings is that you can simply drag and drop a definitions file into the display manager icon to load it. That way if it all goes wrong a quick reboot will return to your configured monitor settings.

Alternatively, typing blind, press F12 then enter Wimpmode 32

Not had much luck with MakeModes even with the instructions.

I've found this model (for Samsung SyncMaster C23A550U), which works in 1920x1080 256 colours, but only has just this resolution.
# Modefile created by John Rickman using !MakeModes version 0.27a (8 Nov 2006)
#
# Monitor - Samsung SyncMaster model C23A550U Hub monitor
#

file_format:1
monitor_title:Samsung C23A550U
DPMS_state:3

# 1920 x 1080 (50Hz)
startmode
mode_name:1920 x 1080
x_res:1920
y_res:1080
pixel_rate:148000
h_timings:80,204,0,1920,176,264
v_timings:0,26,8,1080,0,3
sync_pol:1
endmode

# End
Would like to add 1440x900 256 & 1600x900 256, but as I have said I can't make sense of MakeModes.

If anyone could make up a MDF for my Samsung SyncMaster S24B150 monitor, I'll be forever grateful.

Ideally you would make a mode file and test / tweak it on the Monitor concerned. The below hopefully should be somewhere near. I had a lot of trouble making
1600 x 900 for some reason.

But anyway see how it looks

Post by Daveo » Wed May 20, 2020 4:24 am

Ok tested MDF and only the 1920x1080 displayed correctly on screen.

1440x900 & 1600x900 both appeared with black bars down sides and top & bottom of desktop off screen.

1609x1200 resulted in a scrambled display.

I'm guessing it's the timings but as I've said I have no experience with Makemodes or MDFs, so not sure how to self fix the issues.

Sorry for being unable to do this myself, I just can't make much sense of makemodes and the instructions didn't help much either (nothing against anyone, it's just part of my learning difficulties. Some things I can figure out and others I can't, no matter how hard I try).

Wow, you have the world's fussiest monitor!

Can you plug it into some other machine and run an EDID reading tool, to see if that gives a clue as to what it expects?

By the way, I have managed to get the following modes working with different settings...

1920x1080 from original c23a550u MDF I found via Google search
1600x900 from hl274hpb MDF shared by acorndave
1024x768 from Pro 450 MDF already on Risc PC

Still need to find working settings for 1440x900

Here is my current updated MDF...

Ok looks like your getting close. If you want to get your monitor edid info. Download DumpEDID.

It doesn't say so, but I can confirm it works with Windows 10. It's command line based

Those are the main ones.

Not sure what modes the games I have on the hard disc need. Games like Lemmings, Crystal Maze, etc. I think they may need 640x480 or 800x600 (but I am only guessing on this).

Thank you for what you've done to help get this monitor working correctly with RiscPC.

Wonder if it's worth softloading RiscOS 6.20. I have 4.39 (ROM) at the moment.
