Hi im new
Hi im new
Hi folks im andy and i grew up with an electron brand new out the box and was besotted with computers on show in shops that much that i had been known to spend entire saturdays stood in whsmiths or boots cookshop drooling over the computers that you were allowed to play on. Ive always been more fascinated with type ins than games mainly because the type ins never hardly worked lol. I recall 1 such game called the monsters of arkyron that took me an age to type in and i got it to half work myself altho i think it was written for the bbc. however i now own a bbc b micro and have searched for a very long time to find the magazine or scan that this type in game was published in with no luck. does anyone else recall this? it was christmas going into 1983 or 1984 i think
Thanks guys
Andy

Hi,
Sorry I can't help with your immediate request but there are many on the forums that probably can.
Anyway, welcome to the forums.

Welcome

Re: Hi im new
7 years late, but I have found the Monster of Arkyron.
It was from the now hard to find "Games Computing" magazine, August 1984 issue.
It is authored by Steve W. Lucas who was an adventure writing machine, not only for the beeb, but also for the Oric. http://bbcmicro.co.uk/index.php?rt_R=&r ... cas&sort=b
I will add it to my pile of things to do, unless someone fancies scanning OCR ing it?? Or just typing it in? As I have lots of other games on my list to type in at the moment..
Lee.

Re: Hi im new
Lee all typed in
, found some more errors since posting so edited and replaced files
To save a bit of time ive included both programs as text files, note i've altered the loader as it had a PAGE=&E00 command that balls'd it up
debugging listings in 2018 oh yeah

Re: Hi im new
In Program 2 at line 340, the code conditionally jumps out of a FOR-NEXT loop which will always eventually lead to the "Too many FORs" error. Without changing the construct to something more appropriate, the 'correct' way to exit a FOR-LOOP is to set the index variable to its last value and to skip to the NEXT. So, simply change line 300 from...Slo wrote:yet one remains in that while you are playing after so many turns it crashes with a too many FORs at line 290
Code: Select all
280 IFP%=18THENPROCmonster
290 E=0:FORT%=1TO24:PP%=0:IFB%(T%,1)=P%THENPP%=1
300 IFPP%=1THENGOTO340
310 NEXT:GOT0340
320 IFE=OTHENPRINT'"I can see:-"
330 PRINT'G$(T%):E=E+1:G0T0310
340 PRINT'"What should I do ";:INPUTZ$
Code: Select all
280 IFP%=18THENPROCmonster
290 E=0:FORT%=1TO24:PP%=0:IFB%(T%,1)=P%THENPP%=1
300 IFPP%=1THENT%=24
310 NEXT:GOT0340
320 IFE=OTHENPRINT'"I can see:-"
330 PRINT'G$(T%):E=E+1:G0T0310
340 PRINT'"What should I do ";:INPUTZ$
EDIT : No, wait - I've just noticed that line 330 jumps back in to the NEXT which is then going to give a "No FOR" error

See if you can figure what it is trying to do here and if you get rid of the jump back to the NEXT at line 330 then it'll work ok with the first change.

Re: Hi im new
MartinB there we're errors in my typing
, and probably still are,1490 DEFPROCmonster had a capital R on the end. line 300 should have then 320 on the end and thats where the too many FORs happened, i'm getting there though

Ah, ok, I'll shut up then....

Re: Hi im new
Not to worry its great that you can figure stuff out with basic, everytime i get rid of a typo bug another one is right behind it
I've reposted them yet again, seems to be working now yay

I was sure I had said welcome, but can't finds it so Welcome

Re: Hi im new
I posted this 3 month before you joined so that would have been difficult lol but welcome to you too tricky
Re: Hi im new
Spotted a couple of bugs and corrected a spelling mistake. The game is now solvable.
New version here: WALKTHROUGH: * this does not address the FOR...NEXT error that MartinB highlighted above.
Lee.
PS - I think there is a bug at line 1470: I have changed AG to AF... Without this change, the game does not recognise you have the wirecutters and so cannot cut the fence to get to the turnips....
This means if I am right, the game was un-winnable as printed!
Lee.
EDIT: slightly updated game and walkthrough 01/12/18 12.53pm
Added to ARCHIVE SUBMISSIONS for better discoverability.
