New Atom Member

Post by DavidWallis » Thu Oct 18, 2018 12:55 pm

Hi all.

I dug my old acorn out from my Mum's loft and got it to boot! Also have a dead atom and a dead BBC master, which I hope to revive.

Cheers,
David

Welcome David,

You came to the right place.
Can you post some pictures from the inside of your Atoms and BBC?

Enjoy the forum......

This is my original Atom. Bought in December 1982 from a shop in Market Harborough, already assembled. It had the full 12k. I lent it to someone in the 80s and it came back with 3 keys missing, which was a shame. I would like an MMC card board for it, and a colour board. I would also really like to add a 5.25 disk to it, because although modern storage is great, I like the experience of using 5.25 inch disks

https://ibb.co/m6MERL

I bought this one as a non-worker off ebay, mostly for the keys, but I hope to get it working and use it as a test Atom for projects and keep my old one in good condition.

Welcome.

That's only the second "issue 3" Atom I know of, so look after it!

The other one is owned by SirMorris I think.

The issue 3 one I bought of ebay. Unfortunately it's rather scruffy and a non runner.

But the first one is one I've had since 82!

Nothing that can't be fixed - most likely just a RAM fault. :D

Now I have one to swap with I can debug. Will try a minimal 2k setup first.

I know the graphics 2114s in my old version 4 are OK because mode 4 works fine.

I'm sure you already know this, but on the Issue 3 Atom it looks like the regulators have been bypassed, so it needs to be fed from a 5V regulated supply (2A or more), not the original 8V one.

Has anyone tried to pull the PCB layout off a bare atom board? I would possibly be keen on having some PCBs made up. I would sell the surplus at cost if anyone else wanted one.

Is there a solution for the keyboard? Can you buy keys anywhere?
And can you buy the TV modulator?
I have a couple of 6847s (as well as the 2 in the Atoms) but I don't know if they work.

Thanks hoglet. Yes, I was powering it off a bench supply at 5V and measured 5V on the supply pins on one of the 2114s.

Do check out the Atom 2015 thread:
viewtopic.php?t=9173&start=240#p109091

I re-purposed the key switches and caps from an old Beeb keyboard and I'm very happy with the result.

This is now my preferred Atom.

I have a few spare keys - you might get lucky and not need to cannibalise the iss.3. Like Dave says - there's no Atom that can't be fixed.

Thanks sirmorris. Unfortunately I have missing keys on the iss3 too. But it would be nice to make the both complete. I will see what's missing when I get home this evening.

welcome.
I have had an atom now for about Six months and apart from purchasing a PSU and the mmc and ram/ROM modules that you are after haven't dome much else.
I might take it along to the RISCOS (+8bit) show next weekend, space in the car allowing.

So, I have 3 keys missing on my old iss 4, and one on the ebay iss 3. In total I need:

left/right,
copy,
1
2.

I don't suppose you have those ones sirmorris?

Also, (see other thread in 'Atom') I am still unable to send private messages. Sirmorris, do you have any MMC boards also?

I think I still have one or two spares....
And please make that issue 3 Atom working again. The mainboard looks good so it will work again :)

I would possibly be keen on having some PCBs made up.
I have some HiRes scans taken from an empty PCB.

I thought the case for the iss. 3 that I bought off ebay was in a poor state, but I have cleaned it up and it'
s not too bad on the top. Damage on the bottom where someone has rested it on their soldering iron, and a badly fitted on/off switch in a cutout at the back. Other than that, not too bad.

Now to get it working!

I now have my ATOMMC installed. Can't believe I'm running lisp and FORTH on my old Atom. What I would have given to have that in 1982. But I didn't have enough pocket money. And I can save my programs without crossing my fingers every time I press 'record' on the tape recorder.

Now let's see what I can remember about 6502 programming.

Looks very pretty.
