Anyone else suffer from bent finger(s)?

Post by SimonSideburns » Thu Aug 06, 2020 4:46 pm

Over the last 6 months or so my ring finger on my left hand has developed an unusual bump by the joint nearest the knuckle and the finger between that joint to the knuckle has thinned a bit, and that finger now doesn't straighten. It's probably 30 degrees or thereabouts from straight.

It mostly seems to bend fine towards the palm of the hand.

It made me think about my health and how it might hinder my love of retro computing if it worsens as time goes on.

I wonder if anyone else has similar things going on, and how you deal with or dealt with it.

Let me know what ails you, and your coping strategy.
Just remember kids, Beeb spelled backwards is Beeb!

Judging by the description you have given, you could be experiencing Dupuytren's Contracture. My granddad had similar happen to the little finger in his left hand after he reached his 60's.
If you find yourself saying, I can’t straighten my fingers – Dupuytren’s (dew-pa-trans) Contracture may be the cause. This condition causes your ring and little finger to curl in towards your palm and the tissues under your skin to harden and form bumps or knots. As the tissues get tighter and shorter, they draw the fingers down and prevent you from being able to straighten them.
The above was unashamedly 'borrowed' from here: https://www.blog.ohmyarthritis.com/i-ca ... upuytrens/

Get it properly diagnosed, make an appointment to see your doctor.

Sounds like what my Dad has, but can't remember what it's called - does look like that Dupuytren's Contracture though.

But as topcat96 says, best get it checked out.

I have psoriatic arthritis which comes with pain and swollen joints, but the end result is a permanent bend in the same finger, but joint nearest the tip. This did throw off my already poor typing, but I nearly got used to it after a few months.

Try googling “trigger finger” and “tendon nodules” to see if they match your symptoms.

Not so much retro affecting but I have mild osteoarthritis down my right side and my right wrist crackles horribly when I rotate it (crepitus I believe).
For a couple of years I had to mouse with my left hand while it calmed down. I don’t have a mouse for the Beeb so doesn’t affect that too much. Using a joystick with Elite is not so good though.

Sounds like you're having trouble tuning it in properly. Have you checked your antenna?
