Royal Mail computer game stamps

Post by SimonSideburns » Tue Jan 07, 2020 2:19 pm

The Royal Mail is going to be issuing stamps with pictures on from computer games that were groundbreaking.

The one of interest here is Elite, which gets a mention, but that's the only offering from the Beeb in the list.

I don't think it was a particularly balanced list, but that's quite a subjective thing and everyone will have their own opinion on what should be on the list.

Anyway, the article I found is on the Newsround site:

Just remember kids, Beeb spelled backwards is Beeb!

Shame they got the aspect ratio wrong on all the stamps... they should be 4:3!

That's a crime!

At least it's the Beeb version of Elite.

Good to see Elite on there, thoroughly deserved. Four Amiga entries too, my inner Amiganut quite likes that :)

Does anyone think the scanner is wrong... seems awfully quiet for such a lot going on and would you get a space station that close to a sun? And what an odd place to be doing zero velocity! I'll put the the stars and sun extending beyond the sides of the instrument panel down to artistic licence!

It's just a montage. I don't think it was ever intended to be an accurate representation of anything.

I thought it was supposed to represent the game! Oh well.

At least it's the Beeb version of Elite.
And they used the Beeb font for the "ELITE 1984" caption, so someone who did the design of that stamp knew what they were doing :-)

They used the correct font / style for all the stamp titles, which is odd that they went to so much effort to create an unconvincing mock-up rather than just playing it for a bit and taking a screenshot.

Unless they played it on a 16:9 screen, it'd be the wrong shape for the stamp. ;)
